About Yurakutei, Inn of the Great Cave

"Yurakutei, Inn of the Great Cave" is a hot spring inn in Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, famous for its hand-dug great cave bath, a rarity even nationwide. Inside the cave, which stretches over 30 meters, steam from the hot spring rises, letting you experience the pleasant comfort of a natural sauna. The spring water comes in two types, Aka-yu and Shiro-yu, both offered as 100% free-flowing water with no added water or heating at all. In addition to the cave bath, the open-air bath and indoor bath also let you feel the energy of the earth directly and enjoy a truly living hot spring. Along with dishes made from fresh seafood from Amakusa, it offers a soothing escape from everyday life.

Aka-yu

A rare spring rich in iron, which turns brownish-red when exposed to air. It is highly mineralized and excellent for keeping the body warm and the skin moisturized. At Yurakutei, this living hot spring is offered as completely free-flowing water with no added water, no heating, and no circulation. In the cave bath and open-air bath, you can fully enjoy its rich, silky texture and the feeling of warmth that spreads from deep within your body.

Shiro-yu

In contrast to Aka-yu, this spring is colorless, clear, and characterized by a smooth feel on the skin. It is gentle, with no strong quirks, and easy for anyone to enjoy a long, relaxing soak. It is also offered as 100% free-flowing spring water, with fresh water constantly filling the baths. By alternating between Aka-yu and Shiro-yu, you can enjoy the full depth of hot spring bathing even more.

The hand-dug great cave bath itself becomes something like a natural steam sauna thanks to the heat and steam of the hot spring. As you walk through the cave, which extends over 30 meters, you can warm your body gradually and deeply. Unlike an artificial sauna, its appeal lies in the sensation of bathing your entire body in the hot spring’s mineral-rich steam. The cave’s dim, distinctive atmosphere brings a deep sense of relaxation.
