A sky-high spa blending into Lake Akan and the sky, plus a spectacular löyly sauna scented with birch

Hokkaido Kushiro City

New Akan Hotel is a hot spring resort hotel standing by the shores of Lake Akan, the mysterious lake in Akan Town, Kushiro City, Hokkaido. Its biggest attraction is the Sky Garden Spa on the hotel rooftop, 30 m above ground. From there, guests can take in a 360-degree panoramic view of Lake Akan and Mt. Oakan and enjoy an infinity experience where the lake and sky seem to become one. On the top-floor 9th-floor large bath, there is a sauna with self-löyly and a view of Lake Akan through its large windows, creating a soothing space scented with natural birch. It also features a superb cold plunge bath made luxuriously with Kushiro Akan Hyakunensui, a precious local water from Akan.

A luxurious cold plunge bath located right in front of the sauna room. It uses Kushiro Akan Hyakunensui as the source water, which is said to have come from rain and snow that fell on Mt. Meakan and were slowly naturally filtered over nearly 100 years before springing forth. The water quality, enriched by nature’s bounty, is exceptionally clear and cold, tightening the body warmed in the sauna and offering an excellent cooling-down experience.
