Hakone Tonosawa Onsen

Kanagawa Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo District

Hakone Tonosawa Onsen

A quiet hot spring area opened up along the Hayakawa Gorge, just beyond Hakone-Yumoto. It is said to have opened in 1614, and flourished in the Edo period as one of the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone. Traditional inns are scattered through the deep valley, including some wooden lodgings that remain and have been designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan. The constant sound of the river adds to the charm, and from the baths you can enjoy close-up views of the gorge scenery, with fresh greenery in spring and brilliant autumn leaves in fall. Although it is only a short distance from the gateway to Hakone, it remains free from the bustle, making it an area favored by true connoisseurs.
