“Yumotokan” is a historic hot spring ryokan in Ogoto Onsen, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, founded in 1929. Guests can enjoy a variety of baths with different atmospheres throughout the property, including the top-floor open-air bath “Gesshin no Yu,” which offers a panoramic view of Lake Biwa, the rustic open-air bath “Yugen Shoyo,” and two observatory large baths. The hot spring is an alkaline simple spring with a pH of 9.0, leaving the skin smooth and silky. The observatory large baths are equipped with a dry sauna and a cold bath, making sauna bathing while overlooking the scenery of Lake Biwa especially appealing. Private open-air baths and dishes prepared with Omi beef are also highly praised.

Ogoto Onsen

A historic hot spring that has been gushing since the early Showa period. The source is an alkaline simple spring with a pH above 9.0, known for its thick, soft texture. The large baths offer a rich variety, from an infinity-style open-air bath on the top floor with a sweeping view of Lake Biwa to an atmospheric open-air bath surrounded by trees. Soaking in the water removes old dead skin cells, and after bathing the skin feels smooth and silky, which is why it is loved as a beauty hot spring.

A dry sauna attached to the observatory large baths “Kobo no Yu” and “Sanbo no Yu.” In the compact room, where the gentle scent of wood drifts through the air, the strong heat efficiently envelops your entire body. There is no TV, and a quiet, calm atmosphere fills the space, allowing you to spend a meditative time focused on the view outside and your own heartbeat. Since the baths are alternated between men and women, you can enjoy sauna bathing with different scenery depending on the time of day.

A compact cold bath installed right in front of the sauna room. The crisp, cold, clear water effectively cools down your body after you have warmed up sufficiently in the sauna. Access to the open-air area is also easy, allowing you to smoothly transition to outdoor air bathing overlooking Lake Biwa, where the quiet lake breeze leads you into deep relaxation.
