“Yurakutei, the inn with the great cave” is a hot spring ryokan in Kamimashiki, Kumamoto Prefecture, famous for its hand-dug giant cave bath, a rarity even across Japan. Inside the cave, which stretches over 30 meters, hot spring steam drifts through the air, creating the comforting feel of a natural sauna. The spring water comes in two varieties, “Aka-yu” and “Shiro-yu,” both offered as 100% free-flowing natural hot spring water with no added water or reheating. In addition to the cave bath, the open-air bath and indoor bath let you feel the energy of the earth directly, offering the pleasure of a truly living hot spring. Aka-yu

A rare spring rich in iron that turns brownish-red when exposed to air. It is highly concentrated and known for excellent heat-retaining and moisturizing effects. At Yurakutei, this “living hot spring” is offered as a fully free-flowing spring with no added water, no reheating, and no recirculation. You can fully enjoy its rich, thick texture that clings to the skin and the feeling of warmth spreading from deep within your body in the cave bath or open-air bath.

Shiro-yu

In contrast to Aka-yu, this spring is colorless and clear, with a smooth feel on the skin. It has a gentle character with no sharpness, making it easy for anyone to enjoy a long, relaxing soak. It is also offered as 100% free-flowing natural spring water, with fresh water continuously filling the baths. By alternating between Aka-yu and Shiro-yu, you can enjoy the deeper pleasures of hot spring bathing.

The hand-dug giant cave bath itself becomes like a natural steam sauna, warmed by the heat and steam of the hot spring. As you walk through the cave, which stretches over 30 meters, your body is gently and steadily warmed. Unlike an artificial sauna, its appeal lies in the sensation of being enveloped by the minerals of the hot spring all over your body. The dim, cave-like atmosphere also brings a deep sense of relaxation.
