“Yukaikan Kikuya” is an onsen ryokan in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Standing in the center of Shuzenji Onsen, this long-established inn has a history of 400 years, and the main building where Natsume Soseki once rested still remains today. The yukaikan that circles the courtyard with its pond connects the entire building, and as you walk along it, the murmuring of the Katsura River and the seasonal garden scenery gradually change before your eyes. In the spacious indoor bath facing the Katsura River and the garden open-air bath wrapped in a forest-like atmosphere, the alkaline simple spring water gently envelops your skin. The private baths, each with its own distinct charm, are free and require no reservation, so you can take them over whenever you feel like it. There are also detached rooms with open-air baths filled with natural spring water, as well as guest rooms with onsen baths. If you enjoy a drink in the lounge, which is open 24 hours, after your bath, a quiet night of immersion in hot water and history slowly deepens.

Large bath pavilion, indoor bath “Kikuburo”
An indoor bath facing the Katsura River. Its spacious design is shaped like the flow of the river, so the murmur of the Katsura River becomes the accompaniment to your bath. The alkaline simple spring water that flows continuously is rounded and soft, sliding smoothly over the skin. Among the large bath pavilion facilities, only the indoor bath is shared by men and women on a rotating basis, so one of the pleasures of staying here is being able to enjoy different bath spaces during your stay. Except for the late-night cleaning time, it is open both at night and in the morning, so you can return to the sound of the river whenever you feel like it.
Large bath pavilion, garden open-air bath “Suzaku no Yu”
An open-air bath that opens toward the seasonal garden. As you sink into the tub, the forest of Shuzenji and the carefully tended garden spread across your entire view. During the daytime, the green reflections ripple across the water’s surface, and at night you can soak while gazing up at the moon and stars. Though it is the same bath, its expression changes completely between day and night, making it luxurious to enjoy two different scenery views within a single stay. The pleasant touch of the outdoor air against your cheeks is another charm unique to an open-air bath.
Private bath
Four private baths scattered throughout the building. From a round cypress tub scented with hinoki, to an open-air bath overlooking the forest, a tub with a reclining bath, and a hotter bath whose temperature you can adjust to your liking, each has its own distinct charm. The water is free-flowing natural spring water, offering a softness different from the large baths. No reservation is required and there is no charge, so if you check the sign on the door and step inside, it becomes a bathhouse just for you and your party. Open 24 hours, you can enjoy it exclusively even in the middle of the night or at dawn.
Guest room open-air bath
There are detached rooms equipped with private open-air baths, letting you enjoy spring water straight from the source as much as you like. Step out onto the terrace and the breeze will pass through, gently cooling the warmth left on your skin after bathing. There are also rooms with half-open-air onsen baths, so you can sink into the water while still in a relaxed state without even having to go to the public baths. Without worrying about anyone else’s eyes, your own private time continues through the night and into the morning.
