An all-tatami pure Japanese inn where you can enjoy a famous hot spring with 1400 years of history from the top floor

Nagano Stadt Ueda

Ryokan Nakamatuya in Bessho Onsen, Shinshu, is a long-established Japanese inn founded 350 years ago, standing near Kitamuki Kannon in Bessho Onsen, the oldest hot spring resort in Shinshu. This homey inn has tatami mats throughout the building, and its greatest pride is the large scenic bath on the top, 7th floor. From there, you can take in a sweeping panorama of the Shiodadaira plain and the surrounding mountains, while the hot spring, a simple sulfur spring with beautifying waters praised in The Pillow Book, can be enjoyed in its full 100% source flow. In 2025, a full-fledged sauna featuring a rare Italian pellet stove, only the second such example in Japan, was newly added. The gentle warmth of wood and the flames create superb heat, and with a Shigaraki-ware clay pot cold plunge bath and outdoor bathing overlooking Bessho Onsen town, it offers a luxurious ryokan sauna experience unlike any other.

Shinshu's oldest natural hot spring, boasting 1400 years since opening, is a mildly alkaline simple sulfur spring with a pH of 8.9. Its soft feel leaves the skin supple and hydrated, making it a beautifying bath that even babies can safely try for their first hot spring experience. Some tubs also offer 100% free-flowing spring water, where you can enjoy the hot spring's naturally luxurious yunohana, surrounded by the rich scent of sulfur.

Two differently styled private baths where you can lavishly enjoy Bessho's famous hot spring all to yourself in a private space. Like the large baths, they use a mild natural hot spring with weak alkalinity, making them very gentle for delicate baby skin and for older guests as well. Without worrying about others around you, families or couples can soak slowly in this famous hot spring and enjoy a luxurious, peaceful private onsen time.
