Shonai Hotel Suiden Terrasse is a hotel in Tsuruoka, Yamagata, open only to overnight guests. Designed by the world-renowned architect Shigeru Ban, its timber buildings seem to float above the rice paddies, blending into scenery that changes beautifully with each season. Inside are three baths, each with its own character, where natural onsen water fed straight from the source, never recirculated, warms you to the core. In the designer saunas, known for their hexagonal design and paper-tube benches, löyly you pour yourself lets you tune the heat and steam to your liking. Cool your flushed body in the cold plunge, then feel the breeze in the open-air cooling-off area overlooking the reflecting pool and the countryside, and you’ll sink into deep relaxation. With a fitness gym and a library as well, this is a luxurious stay that restores body and mind.
Hot SpringONSEN
Amairo-no-Yu
A main bathhouse striking for its vivid blue tiles that recall a clear sky. The natural onsen water, fed straight from the source, never recirculated, is a chloride spring that holds heat well, so the cozy warmth lasts long after you get out. From the open-air bath, you can see the surrounding mountains and sky through the gap between the roof and the tub, and soak at leisure to the sound of insects and a gentle breeze.
Tsukishiro-no-Yu
A dreamlike main bathhouse with softly tinted white walls, where moonlight falls on the tub at night. Natural onsen water fed straight from the source, never recirculated, flows in generously, and its soft feel on the skin gently eases the fatigue from your whole body. The open-air bath looks out over a beautiful reflecting pool, and you can enjoy quiet, indulgent relaxation while watching the scenery shift with the time of day and the seasons.
Tokiiro-no-Yu
An indoor-only bathhouse, beautiful for its pale, soft pink tiles and hexagonal timber-framed ceiling. It is filled to the brim with fine natural onsen water fed straight from the source, never recirculated, which warms you thoroughly to the core. Gentle natural light pours in through the skylight by day, and at night you can gaze up at the stars and savor a blissful soak in a calm, private space.

Amairo-no-Yu Sauna
A designer sauna set in a beautiful timber space built entirely around the hexagon. Natural light from the skylight gently fills the room, giving it a quiet, calm atmosphere. You can pour your own löyly: splash water over the sauna stones and a pleasant wave of heat and steam wraps around your whole body. Movable seats let you adjust to the height you like, a welcome touch. The windows look out over peaceful countryside, so you can take your time working up a sweat while enjoying the view.
Tsukishiro-no-Yu Sauna
A stylish sauna room whose eye-catching benches echo the paper tubes that are the architect’s signature. Large windows open onto the reflecting pool and the sky, giving you an airy space to refresh yourself. Steam rising from löyly you pour yourself brings a soothing heat that slowly warms you to the core. In the stillness, listening to the sound of water, you can forget the bustle of daily life and lose yourself completely.
