Hokkaido Hakodate City
A modern inn with a wide variety of baths and three types of sauna, where you can fully savor Yunokawa Onsen
Hotel Banso Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen is a modern onsen hotel in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Its large public bath, Yuzugura, is designed around the concept of a hot spring living room, where you can fully enjoy the famous waters of Yunokawa in a wide variety of baths, including an open-air bath, tsuboyu, and lying bath. The sauna facilities include three types: a dry bona sauna that wraps you in gentle heat, a mist sauna with a pleasant aroma, and a steam room. After bathing, you can spend a luxurious, relaxing time in Yuzugura Lounge, where the scent of tatami and wood fills the air. A buffet featuring the bounty of Hokkaido’s seas and land, along with a retro-modern space full of exotic charm, are also part of its appeal.

A natural hot spring fed by Yunokawa Onsen, which boasts a history of more than 350 years. The clear, colorless water has a smooth bathing feel and is a chloride spring with excellent heat-retaining properties that makes it hard to get chilled after bathing. In addition to the open-air bath with a sense of openness, there are a variety of baths such as tsuboyu and lying baths, allowing you to fully savor this traditional famous spring to the fullest.

A steam room filled with a pleasant aroma and warm vapor. By surrendering your whole body to the soft steam, you can gradually warm up from deep within. Even if you are not fond of the heat of a dry sauna, you can still enjoy a comfortable, relaxing time here.

A bona sauna with heaters built beneath the benches. Gentle heat fills the room, allowing you to sweat deeply without feeling stifled. In this quiet space, you can focus fully on yourself and refresh both body and mind.

A highly moisturizing mist sauna with a pleasant aroma. Fine mist gently envelops your entire body, encouraging a mild sweat while leaving your skin and hair hydrated. Enjoy a deep sense of relaxation while being soothed by its rich fragrance.

A cold plunge bath that gently cools down your warmed body. Its pleasantly refreshing chill tightens your whole body and leaves you feeling invigorated. After the cold plunge bath, you can relax at the open-air space where the air feels crisp, or in Yuzugura Lounge, a Japanese-Western style post-bath area with sofas placed on tatami mats. In this spacious, comfortable setting, you can fully enjoy a blissful totonou time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Most of what we surveyed never even made it onto this site. This book is a further cut from what did. Our editor bathed in every onsen and sauna in it, and wrote only what they confirmed on the ground.
