Okawaso,AizuAshinomakiOnsen

A hot spring inn boasting spectacular open-air baths spreading out in terraced tiers toward the gorge and superb saunas with distinct personalities

Fukushima Aizuwakamatsu City

"Aizu Ashinomaki Onsen Okawaso" is a long-established hot spring inn representing Ashinomaki Onsen, standing along the dramatic Aga River (the Okawa River) gorge. Soaking while listening to the murmur of the river is a breathtaking experience, especially in the spectacular open-air bath Shiki Butai Tanada, where the tubs are arranged in tiered, terraced-rice-field style to overlook the gorge panorama, and in the 空中露天風呂, an open-air bath that juts out over the gorge like Kyoto's Kiyomizu no Butai. The spring water is a calcium-sodium sulfate-chloride hot spring with excellent heat retention and moisturizing properties, warming you through to the core. The public baths are equipped with a rare Pink Salt Sauna on the men's side, featuring rock salt on the walls, and a Baku Hanzeki Nererobi Sauna on the women's side, where you can lie down and work up a deep sweat, along with a cold plunge bath inspired by the gorge for the ultimate refreshment.

TypeNatural Hot Spring

The signature feature of Okawaso, this spectacular open-air bath is arranged in tiered steps like terraced rice fields facing the gorge. The subtle scent of wood from the beautiful cypress roof, the powerful panoramic view of the Okawa River flowing right in front of you, and the abundant natural beauty of Ashinomaki can all be enjoyed with all five senses. The smooth hot spring water, blended from multiple sources, gently envelops and warms the entire body.

Kuchu Open-Air Bath

A spectacular open-air bath built in wood and projecting out toward the gorge, reminiscent of Kyoto's Kiyomizu no Butai. You can enjoy the ultimate sense of freedom while feeling the changing colors of the seasons up close and in a dynamic way, such as spring cherry blossoms, early summer fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and winter snow-view bathing. In the afternoon, it is a paid private bath by complete reservation only; in the morning, it is a special bath used on a men-and-women alternating basis.
