About Kyukamura Nikko Yumoto

"Kyukamura Nikko Yumoto" is a resort hotel in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It stands in a quiet forest on the shore of Lake Yunoko in Oku-Nikko. The baths draw water from the source of Nikko Yumoto Onsen, said to have opened in the Nara period, and deliver it straight from the source. This sulfur-rich water is originally clear, but changes color to white or green when exposed to light and air, so each visit reveals a different look. The bath area includes a large public bath with both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, separated for men and women. The indoor bath is built with wood as its central theme, while the open-air bath has a graceful design surrounded by trees. In the tsubo-yu bath, made for one person at a time, you are enveloped by the sound of the water and birdsong, and at night you can gaze up at the stars. Inside the hotel, there is a library, a lounge, and a restaurant with views of Lake Yunoko, making it a convenient base for hiking and skiing.

Hot SpringONSEN

Free-flow from source

Large Public Bath

It draws spring water from Nikko Yumoto Onsen, said to have opened in the Nara period, and keeps it flowing straight from the source. Although it emerges clear and colorless, it gradually grows cloudy and shifts toward white or green as it is exposed to light and air. The sulfur aroma rises through the bath, and its warmth slowly seeps into the core of your body. The indoor bath is designed with wood as its central theme, and the scent of wood and hot water helps you forget everyday life. The open-air bath has a graceful setting surrounded by trees, and there is also a tsubo-yu bath for one person at a time, where you can enjoy the sound of water flowing from the spout, birdsong, and, at night, a sky full of stars all to yourself. Because the source temperature is high, water is added to adjust the bath temperature.

Most of what we surveyed never even made it onto this site. This book is a further cut from what did. Our editor bathed in every onsen and sauna in it, and wrote only what they confirmed on the ground.
