About Kyukamura Nikko Yumoto

Kyukamura Nikko Yumoto is a resort hotel in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. It stands on the shore of Lake Yunoko in Okunikko, held in a quiet forest. Its water is drawn from the source of Nikko Yumoto Onsen, said to have been opened in the Nara period, and this sulfur-bearing water is fed straight from the source, never recirculated. Colorless and clear by nature, it is a fickle water that turns white or green as it meets light and air, showing a different face each time you come. The main bathhouses, each with indoor and open-air baths, are separate for men and women; the indoor baths are built mainly of wood, while the open-air baths are atmospheric spaces surrounded by trees. In the ceramic urn bath, which you soak in alone, you are wrapped in the sound of the water and birdsong, and at night you can look up at a starry sky. Inside are a library, a lounge and a restaurant overlooking Lake Yunoko, and the hotel also serves as a base for hiking and skiing.

Water is drawn from the source of Nikko Yumoto Onsen, said to have been opened in the Nara period, and fills the baths flowing straight through. Colorless and clear when it rises, it is a fickle water that grows cloudier, turning white or green, as it meets light and air. The scent of sulfur rises, and the heat seeps quietly into the core of the body. The indoor bath is built mainly of wood, and the scents of wood and water make you forget everyday life. The open-air bath is an atmospheric space surrounded by trees, with a ceramic urn bath for one as well, where you can have to yourself the sound of water running from the spout, birdsong and, at night, a sky full of stars. Because the source is very hot, water is added to adjust the temperature.
