Tochigi Nikko City
An all-inclusive onsen resort where the murmur of the stream and a rock open-air bath soothe you
TAOYA Kawaji is an onsen resort hotel in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. Set beside the mountain stream of the Ojika River, it gently eases away the fatigue of travel with a rugged open-air bath built of massive boulders and an indoor bath of Oya stone, where large windows frame the passing seasons. The water comes from Kawaji Onsen, which has flowed since the Edo period: a mildly alkaline simple spring known for its soft feel on the skin. The main bathhouse has a dry sauna and a cold plunge, and after working up a sweat you can enjoy cooling off in the open air in the space beside the open-air bath, feeling the natural breeze. The hotel runs on an all-inclusive style, with drinks in the lounge, ice cream after your bath and even a late-night snack included in the room rate, so you can savor refined, graceful hours to your heart’s content.

A main bathhouse drawing on Kawaji Onsen, which has flowed since the Edo period. The mildly alkaline simple spring is gentle on the skin and known for its soft feel. From the indoor bath of Oya stone, large windows look out on nature through the four seasons, while in the rock-built open-air bath facing the Ojika River, gourd-shaped lanterns cast a dreamlike glow.

A dry sauna within the main bathhouse. In the quiet room you can take your time working up a sweat and detox from the fatigue of daily life. On leaving the sauna, you move easily to the cold plunge close by and on to cooling off in the open air in the outdoor area, spending a deeply relaxing time to the murmur of the mountain stream.

A cold plunge right beside the sauna. The cold water braces your flushed body and leaves you wonderfully refreshed. Once you have cooled down, you can enjoy blissful time cooling off in the open air in the space beside the open-air bath, feeling the natural breeze.
