Yamagata Yamagata City
A highland resort of natural onsen fed straight from the source and Kenzo Tange architecture
Takamiya Rurikura Resort is a resort hotel in Zao Onsen, Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. It promises a refined stay in spaces designed by the world-renowned architect Kenzo Tange, furnished with pieces from Yamagata Carrozzeria, the studio led by industrial designer Ken Okuyama. In the main bathhouse, SPA Yururi, natural onsen water that is strongly acidic and highly effective for beautiful skin is fed straight from the source, never recirculated, and a dry sauna lined with hinoki lets you sweat slowly and thoroughly. From late April to mid-November, the rooftop terrace and garden terrace look out over the Zao mountains, a place to unwind after the bath in the highland breeze.

A main bathhouse where you can indulge in the water of Zao Onsen, with a history of 1,900 years since it first opened, fed straight from the source, never recirculated. The water, the most strongly acidic in all of Zao Onsen, is praised as a “natural beauty serum,” and your skin feels remarkably smooth after the bath. It is open 24 hours, so at any hour you can take in the benefits of this celebrated spring with your whole body and spend blissful time as the weariness of body and mind slowly melts away.

A dry sauna with hinoki-lined walls and a soothing scent of wood. It strongly promotes sweating, so you can work up a thorough sweat. Afterward, return to the strongly acidic onsen, praised as a “natural beauty serum,” and let your whole body take in the comfort of this celebrated spring.
