Yamagata Nanyo City

Stay in Akayu Onsen

An onsen town at the foot of a hill surrounded by vineyards in Nanyo, Yamagata Prefecture, with a history of about 900 years since it first opened. In 1093, it is said that the younger brother of Minamoto no Yoshiie healed his battle wounds in this water, and the spring came to be called Akayu after the water turned red with blood. The spring is a sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride spring. Though colorless and clear, it is rich and its warmth lingers long after bathing. The surrounding area is one of Japan’s leading grape-producing regions, with wineries scattered throughout. Enjoying the onsen and local wine together is a way of spending time unique to this land.
