Yamagata Kaminoyama City
An onsen town spread across a basin in Kaminoyama City, Yamagata Prefecture, with a view of the Zaō mountain range right in front of you. According to legend, the spring was discovered in 1458 after a crane was found healing a wound on its leg, and it was once called Tsuruhagi no Yu. Inns are scattered across several districts, including Yumachi, Shinyu, Hayama, and Takamatsu, each with its own distinct atmosphere. The water is a sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride spring. Kaminoyama Castle stands in the center of town, and there are also foot baths dotted around where you can soak while taking in views of the Zaō mountain range. As the Yamagata Shinkansen stops here, it is an onsen destination with easy access from Tokyo.
