Gunma Nakanojo Town

Stay in Shima Onsen

An onsen area stretching along the Shima River valley in Nakanojo Town, Gunma Prefecture. Its name comes from the legend that it can cure 40,000 ailments, and it was designated as one of the first National Health and Recreational Onsen Resorts. At some inns you can also drink the onsen water. The sight of vermilion-lacquered bridges and wooden buildings lined up together is emblematic of the onsen town, and it is also known as a setting for films. Nearby is Oku-Shima Lake, which holds blue water known as Shima Blue.
