Nagano Yamanouchi Town
This onsen area keeps a nostalgic atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time, with historic wooden onsen inns lining its stone-paved alleys. Overnight guests receive a special key to make the round of the nine public baths, a tradition called kyuto meguri, a bathing pilgrimage to ward off misfortune. It also lies at the foot of Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, where wild monkeys bathe in the onsen and travelers from all over the world come to see the Snow Monkeys, which has made it a leading international destination as the base for visiting them.
