Ryokan Nakamatsuya, Bessho Onsen, Shinshu is a long-established Japanese-style ryokan with 350 years of history, standing near Kitamuki Kannon in Bessho Onsen, the oldest hot spring resort in Shinshu. This welcoming inn has tatami flooring throughout, and its greatest pride is the observation large public bath on the top 7th floor. Guests can take in a sweeping panorama of the Shiota Plain and the surrounding mountains below, while enjoying the hot spring water from a source that has been praised in The Pillow Book, a simple sulfur spring known as a beautiful-skin bath, with 100% source water. In 2025, a full sauna was newly added, using a rare Italian pellet stove, only the second example in Japan. With the warmth of wood and the heat of flame creating an exceptional atmosphere, a ceramic tsubo cold water bath, and outdoor air baths overlooking the Bessho Onsen area, it offers an unprecedented luxury sauna stay experience.

Observation Large Public Bath Indoor Bath

A spacious indoor bath with abundant hot spring water, set inside a bathing area with a pleasant tatami floor. The oldest natural hot spring in Shinshu, with 1400 years of history since its opening, is a mildly alkaline simple sulfur spring with a pH of 8.9. Its gentle texture leaves the skin soft and moisturized, making it a beautiful-skin bath that even babies can enjoy for their first hot spring experience. Some bathtubs also offer 100% source-water free-flowing bathing, where the naturally luxurious mineral flakes of the hot spring drift through the water, all wrapped in the rich scent of sulfur.

Observation Open-Air Bath

An observation open-air bath with an overwhelming panoramic view over the Bessho Onsen area from the top floor. Only Nakamatsuya Ryokan offers the luxury of being able to view the famous Kitamuki Kannon from the open-air bath. At night, you can fully enjoy a relaxing soak in an exquisite natural hot spring scented with sulfur, while admiring the sparkling starry sky and distant night views, in tubs decorated with Himekawa stone and a bath made of ancient Japanese cypress.

Family Bath (Private Bath)

Two private baths with different atmospheres, where you can luxuriously enjoy Bessho’s famous hot spring all to yourself in a private space. As with the large public bath, they use a mild natural hot spring with a mildly alkaline quality, making them very gentle for delicate baby skin and for older guests as well. Without worrying about other people around you, families and couples can relax and soak in the famous hot spring together, fully enjoying a luxurious and peaceful private onsen time.
