Japan’s proud sacred site of sauna
"Sauna Shikiji" is a sauna facility in Shikiji, Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Known as a sacred site for sauna lovers, its biggest highlight is a cold plunge bath filled with 100% natural water from Suruga’s beautiful environment. The natural water, filtered deep underground, is medium-soft water with a hardness of 84 and is rich in calcium and magnesium. It is drinkable and free to take home. The facility has two herbal saunas, Finnish-style and Korean-style, and the high-temperature dry sauna follows a Showa-era strong style that lets you work up a serious sweat. The herbal sauna uses authentic medicinal herbs blended in a special formula by a Korean herbal doctor. It also features an herbal medicinal bath, a high-mineral natural-water jacuzzi bath, and a dining area on the second floor. Open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. About 15 minutes by car from Shizuoka Station, with parking for 50 cars.
A herbal bath with a distinctive cypress-bark color and aroma, blended with more than 10 kinds of medicinal herbs such as matsufuji, plantain, and dokudami. The mineral spring components and herbal ingredients work together, and it is expected to help with a wide range of conditions including skin problems, stomach and intestinal issues, rheumatism, lower back pain, and stiff shoulders. Its broad benefits, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and blood-vessel normalization effects, enhance detox benefits in synergy with the sauna.
A high-mineral jacuzzi bath using the facility’s natural spring water. In natural water rich in minerals, the jacuzzi and jet streams target pressure points throughout the body, helping promote circulation, recover from fatigue, and relieve stiffness in the shoulders and lower back. It is also introduced as effective for improving skin condition and cold sensitivity, functioning as a relaxation bath variety to loosen the body between hard sauna sessions.
The Finnish Sauna, a symbol of the sacred site of sauna, is characterized by its 110°C dry, intense heat created by METOS KERKES ceramic stones. In this Showa-style strong setup, there is no pouring water and no löyly service at all, so you simply expose yourself to the high-temperature heat and encourage deep sweating. With TV audio playing in the background, the simple experience of quietly continuing to sweat has captivated many sauna enthusiasts.
An authentic herbal sauna using medicinal herbs imported from Korea. The usual temperature is a modest 62°C, but when the high-humidity environment overlaps with fever time, the perceived temperature suddenly jumps, delivering an intense experience close to a heat wave. The room is filled with a distinctive herbal aroma, and the Korean medicinal ingredients such as 当帰, 川芎, and 薄荷 work together with the heat to act on the entire body. Because the floor gets hot, caution is needed at your feet.
Free-flowing Suruga natural water filtered deep underground is used. This is a so-called drinkable cold plunge bath. It is medium-soft water with a hardness of 84 and rich in minerals. The water feels extremely gentle, with a soft quality despite being cold. It has a mellow natural taste that is different from tap water. The free-flowing natural water at the back of the cold plunge bath is drinkable. After the cold plunge bath, you can tot onou on the benches or stools.
