About Tenko no Yu

Tenko no Yu is a day-use bathing facility in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture. It features one of Japan’s rare natural radon hot springs, and its indoor baths offer a unique experience where radon steam, known as a breathing bath, fills the space. The men’s side and the women’s side each have three types of löyly saunas, and there are also three different cold plunge baths. The outdoor relaxation area called Gokuraku Jodo on the men’s side alone offers about 50 seats in a spacious layout, and the weekend heat-wave events are very popular. An open-air bath set among the nationally designated Sanba-ishi rock and tile interiors that reflect Tajimi’s pottery town character create a high-quality space that invites you to spend a full day relaxing.

An open-air source-fed hot spring bath located in the outdoor area for both men and women. The bath is filled directly with the natural radon spring without circulation so you can fully enjoy the spring’s freshness and components. Along with the breathing bath effect of the radon spring, the fresh sensation unique to direct-flow spring water envelops the body. Overlooking a garden of Sanba-ishi rock, you can enjoy a luxuriously indulgent moment that far exceeds a typical day-trip onsen.

High-concentration carbonated spring

A carbonated spring maintained at a consistently high concentration of over 1,200 ppm using a medical-grade artificial carbonic acid device. The bath uses water from the natural radon spring, so you can expect synergistic effects of carbonic acid and radon. After soaking a while, you can enjoy the sight of ultra-fine bubbles that had covered the body rising vigorously to the surface when you stroke the skin. These invisible microbubbles coat the skin and help promote circulation, beauty, and fatigue recovery.

Electric bath

A massage-type electric bath that relieves stiffness with three types of electrical stimulation: pressing, kneading, and tapping. It offers a wider variety of sensations than typical electric baths and can target pinpoint stiffness in the shoulders, lower back, and legs. Installed in the indoor bathing area on both the men’s and women’s sides, using it in combination with hot spring bathing can further enhance fatigue recovery effects.

Jet baths

The men’s side features two types of jet baths: a strong-jet bath that loosens shoulders, lower back, and legs, and a lying jet bath that delivers jet stimulation to the whole body while you lie on your back. They are suitable for loosening muscles that receive a heavy load after sauna sessions, and combining thermal bathing with jet stimulation helps promote circulation and relieve fatigue.

An automatic löyly sauna using a METOS isness heater combined with fragrant stones. The rounded ceiling design helps the steam spread evenly after löyly, producing a gradual enveloping sensation from the back. A deliberately set humidity of 55% creates a comfortable, high-humidity environment without dryness. In addition to automatic löyly at :00 and :30 each hour, aufguss events by heat masters are held on weekends. A TV is installed for comfortable extended stays.

Conversation Sauna (barrel sauna)

An outdoor barrel sauna built entirely of Hinoki cypress from Mt. Yamizo on the Ibaraki–Fukushima border. Hitachi hinoki from Mt. Yamizo is highly aromatic, and the moment you enter the sauna the high-quality hinoki scent envelops you. The barrel sauna’s curved shape improves convective heat efficiency, allowing steam from self-löyly to circulate thoroughly. Designed for socializing, it is a high-temperature outdoor sauna well suited to enjoying time with friends or family.

Silent Zen Sauna (barrel sauna)

An outdoor barrel sauna with partitioned seating that gives each person their own space. Conversation inside the sauna is prohibited; the only sound is water evaporating on the sauna stones. A quiet rule requires performing one ladle of self-löyly with the ladle while a spotlight is on, creating a deeply meditative atmosphere. It is an ideal choice for those who want to be alone with their body and mind.

Using the METOS isness system, this sauna maintains a balanced high-humidity environment at around 50% humidity. Two types of automatic löyly alternate: Strong (3 L of water at :00 each hour) and Mild (at :30). You can enjoy variations in heat and steam intensity. After 21:00 the TV is turned off and the space becomes a meditation time, offering a quiet environment to reflect inwardly.

Mist Sauna

A women-only mist sauna where seasonal herbs and selected aromatics are dispersed throughout the room. Although the temperature is lower, the very high humidity makes it hard for skin and hair to dry, providing strong beauty benefits. Because it is less oppressive and places less strain on the body, it is suitable even for those who find conventional saunas difficult. The combination of fragrance and high-humidity steam warms you gently to the core in a short time and promotes deep relaxation.

Barrel Sauna

An outdoor barrel sauna built entirely from Hitachi hinoki sourced from Mt. Yamizo. The refined hinoki aroma and the barrel’s characteristic uniform heat convection enhance the self-löyly experience. Located outdoors, it allows you to feel the presence of fresh air while immersing in high heat. The approach—crossing a stone bridge to the garden-surrounded totonou space—completes this sauna as the climax of the women’s sauna area.

Cold BathCOLD BATH

Gurushin cold plunge bath

An intensely cold indoor cold plunge bath with water temperature in the single digits. It uses underground natural water and delivers a sharp, blade-like chill that penetrates the whole body instantly. The water depth is 40–60 cm, deep enough to submerge the entire body. Access to a large outdoor relaxation area is close by, creating a smooth flow from piercing cold to deep relaxation.

A cold plunge bath where strong jet currents forcibly strip away the thermal boundary layer between the body and the water, making the perceived temperature much lower even at the same water temperature as a regular cold plunge. It uses underground natural water and includes vibra jets; surrendering your body to the strong flow produces an instantaneous, exhilarating cooling sensation.

An outdoor cold plunge bath adjacent to the outdoor barrel saunas (Conversation Sauna and Zen Sauna). The layout allows you to move quickly from the barrel sauna straight into the cold plunge, making alternating hot-cold bathing highly efficient. The sensation of being enveloped by cold water in the open air differs from indoor baths and offers an open, invigorating cooling experience.

An indoor cold plunge bath adjacent to the automatic löyly sauna and the mist sauna. The fairly spacious tub is finished with three-color tiles in blue, aqua, and white, reflecting the beauty of Tajimi’s pottery town. The tactile quality of the tiles is delicate, allowing you to experience Tajimi’s ceramic culture with both sight and touch.

A rare cold plunge bath that uses the natural radon spring as a direct source-fed flow. The water is set at a comparatively warm level of around 23°C for a softer, less stimulating chill. It is suited to those who want to cool down slowly while enjoying the radon spring’s cell-activating and circulation-enhancing effects, or for people who find icy cold water uncomfortable and prefer to lower body temperature gradually after a high-temperature sauna.

The water is set slightly warmer, making it suitable for those who want to lower body temperature slowly over time. Being able to lie outdoors and receive both air and water chill simultaneously creates a distinctive relaxation effect. Access to an outdoor garden relaxation space is nearby.
