Kumamoto Kumamoto City
Enjoy Kumamoto’s water in an open-air bath filled with the scent of wood and the spirit of Aso’s nature
"Ref Kumamoto by VESSEL HOTELS" is a hotel with a bathing facility in Kumamoto City. Its space design is characterized by the use of green, water, and wood, and the large public bath lets guests enjoy the pure plain hot water that Kumamoto, Japan’s number one groundwater city, is proud of. The open-air bath features Aso stone bedrock, camellias, maples, and other plants, allowing guests to feel the breath of nature even though the hotel is in the downtown Shinshigai area. The men’s bath has a high-temperature sauna and a cold plunge bath, while the women’s bath has a mist sauna. After bathing, guests can spend time however they like in the manga library with 10,000 volumes.

A large public bath that embodies the idea of a bath where you can relax at ease with the scent of wood. The open-air bath is a carefully designed space created by landscape architect Toshiya Ogino. Aso stone bedrock, camellias, maples, and other trees are arranged throughout the area, allowing guests to feel the refreshing scent of nature and the coolness of the breeze even in the middle of a downtown district. Sink into the wooden bath and the kama-gama bath, and enjoy Kumamoto’s pure plain hot water.

A high-temperature sauna in the men’s bath. After working up a good sweat, cool down in the adjacent cold plunge bath and head to the rest area in the open-air zone. In the nature-rich open-air space with Aso stone and maples, you can enjoy outdoor air bathing while feeling the coolness of the breeze.

A mist sauna in the women’s bath. Wrapped in gentle steam, you can warm yourself gradually. After the sauna, relax in the large public bath scented with wood or in the open-air bath with its refreshing natural fragrance, and spend time easing both body and mind.

A cold plunge bath adjacent to the high-temperature sauna in the men’s bath. In Kumamoto, known as Japan’s number one groundwater city and blessed with abundant natural water, you can feel the richness of its water with your whole body. After cooling your overheated body and tightening it up, step out into the open-air area where plants and trees thrive, and rest while feeling the natural breeze.

Most of what we surveyed never even made it onto this site. This book is a further cut from what did. Our editor bathed in every onsen and sauna in it, and wrote only what they confirmed on the ground.
