About Ryokan Sanga (Kurokawa Onsen)
Ryokan Sanga (Kurokawa Onsen) is an onsen inn in Oguni, Kumamoto Prefecture. It sits quietly deep in the forest a little away from the Kurokawa Onsen town, with rich nature spreading across a vast 3,000-tsubo (about 9,900 m²) grounds. Its greatest pride is natural onsen water fed straight from the source, never recirculated, rising from two sources of its own: Yakushi-no-Yu and Bihada-no-Yu. Listening to the murmur of the river and the rustle of the trees, you can stretch out to your heart’s content in baths of different character, from open-air baths to indoor baths. The guest rooms are calm Japanese-style spaces where you can feel the changing seasons, and there are also detached cottages with their own open-air baths. Savoring authentic kaiseki that makes the most of ingredients from Aso, you can spend timeless hours far from everyday life at this blissful inn.
Hot SpringONSEN
Moyai-no-Yu
A men-only open-air bath where you can enjoy the clear, bluish water of Source No. 2 (Bihada-no-Yu, the “water for beautiful skin”), fed straight from the source, never recirculated. Wrapped entirely in the rich forest of the vast 3,000-tsubo grounds, it lets you feel the powerful breath of nature up close. In this wild, rustic setting, the only sounds are the rustling of leaves and the clear murmur of the river. Cut off completely from the bustle of everyday life, surrender yourself to the light, pleasant water in the silence, and body and mind are led into deep relaxation.
Shiki-no-Yu
A women-only open-air bath built to nestle beside the stream that runs through the grounds. It also uses Source No. 2, and the soft, highly moisturizing water gently envelops the skin. With the clear murmur of the nearby stream as background music, you can take in the changing scenery of the seasons to your heart’s content, from the fresh green of spring to the autumn leaves. There is deliberately no washing area, so you can indulge in a luxurious soak devoted purely to fine onsen water and a quiet conversation with nature.
Yakushi-no-Yu
Separate indoor baths for men and women, with a faint scent of sulfur and brownish mineral flakes drifting in the water. Here you can luxuriate in a blend of Source No. 1 (a simple sulfur-bearing spring), the origin of the inn, and Source No. 2, fed straight from the source, never recirculated. The two are built with different character: the men’s bath is a rugged, powerful rock bath, while the women’s bath is a hinoki bath full of the warmth of wood. The rich minerals, different from those of the open-air baths, slowly seep into the body, and a pleasant warmth lingers long after you get out. In the simple, calm atmosphere unique to a hidden onsen, it eases chill and fatigue from the core.
Private baths
Reserved for overnight guests, three spaces of different character await: a fragrant hinoki bath that retains a rustic countryside charm, a wild cut-stone bath, and a semi-open-air bath made from a six-shaku (about 1.8 m (6 ft)) wooden tub looking out over lush greenery. The great appeal is having fine water all to yourself, quietly and privately, without anyone’s eyes on you within the vast grounds. Feeling the green of the trees outside the window and the pleasant breeze, you are promised blissful time to unwind body and mind with someone dear, entirely at ease.
Open-air baths in the guest rooms
Some guest rooms, including the detached cottages, come with their own open-air bath or indoor bath, so you can soak in water fed straight from the source, never recirculated, whenever and for as long as you like. A private space where you have the seasonal scenery outside the window all to yourself, like a painting, is a luxury simply by being there. After bathing, let the natural breeze cool your flushed body, and throughout your stay you can enjoy a deep sense of healing, as if becoming one with the changing landscape of the countryside.
