Kumamoto Oguni Town
A hilltop open-air bath with sweeping views, and in every room a bath fed straight from the source, all to yourself
Gekkoujyu Kurokawa is an onsen ryokan in Minamioguni, Kumamoto Prefecture. Its rooms are scattered across a vast 4,500-tsubo (about 14,900 m²) forest, making it a quiet hideaway for adults. Every room has its own indoor bath and open-air bath, each with a different character, so you can have the clear, mildly alkaline natural onsen water, fed straight from the source, never recirculated, all to yourself without anyone disturbing you. From the Sky Open-Air Bath (Tenku no Rotenburo), set on a hilltop within the grounds and available by reservation only, you can take in a 360-degree panorama of Kyushu’s majestic mountains, including the outer rim of Mount Aso’s caldera. The Tsukisae and Gyokurin rooms also come with their own private sauna, where you can sweat to your heart’s content in complete privacy. At night, a sky full of stars and beautiful moonlight pours down, making for a mystical bath that feels deeply at one with nature. With dishes made from seasonal Kyushu ingredients and a relaxation salon as well, the inn promises a blissful stay where you lose track of time and set body and mind free.

Every room has an open-air bath and an indoor bath fed straight from the source, never recirculated. The soft, mildly alkaline simple spring gently envelops a tired body. Each room’s baths are built with a different character, and you can savor a private soak with no one to disturb you while feeling Kurokawa’s rich nature up close. With the sound of the wind through the forest and the songs of small birds as your soundtrack, you can have this renowned water all to yourself for as long as you like.

A private open-air bath on a hilltop within the grounds, at an elevation of 50 m (164 ft), available by reservation only. Natural onsen water fed straight from the source overflows the octagonal tub, and you can take in a 360-degree view of Kyushu’s majestic mountains, including the outer rim of Mount Aso’s caldera and the peaks of Oguni. By day you are wrapped in an overwhelming sense of openness, and at night a sky full of stars and moonlight pours down. It is a mystical bathing experience in which you feel as if you are floating in the air, deeply at one with nature.
