Kunitachi Onsen Yura no Sato is a day-use onsen bathhouse in Kunitachi, Tokyo. Baths line the open-air area overlooking the Tama River, and when you sink in, an unbroken sky opens above you; on clear days the ridgeline of Mount Fuji rises in the distance. The sodium chloride spring that rises from underground is soft on the skin and holds on to its heat even after you leave the water. In one corner of the open-air area you can enjoy a bath where water from the source is heated and poured straight in, flowing through without recirculation. The indoor area has a strongly carbonated bath whose fine bubbles cling to the skin, a high-temperature sauna that wrings out a thorough sweat and a salt sauna that polishes the skin. After calming the heat in the cold plunge, take a deep breath in the open air where the river breeze passes. After bathing, time to doze with manga in hand awaits in the rest area lined with reclining chairs.

Wrapped in gentle heat and moist air, you feel the salt slowly draw out moisture as the surface of your skin becomes smooth. The time spent waiting for the grains to dissolve is itself a pleasure, and after rinsing, your skin is astonishingly smooth. It is a room for a gentler sweat, different from the high-temperature sauna.
A cold plunge that quietly calms the heat built up in the sauna. Lower yourself in bit by bit from the tips of your hands and feet, and the flush fades as a sensation spreads like a crisp, clear film forming on your skin.
