About Sukayu Onsen Ryokan

"Sukayu Onsen Ryokan" is a historic hot spring inn nestled in the Hakkoda mountain range in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. Designated in 1954 as Japan's first National Health Hot Spring Resort, it is one of the country's most celebrated hot springs. It features a vast mixed-gender public bath made entirely of Japanese cypress, along with separate men’s and women’s indoor baths. Five private springs gush on the grounds, and the baths are offered as luxurious free-flowing natural hot spring water. The cloudy, strongly acidic sulfur spring is renowned for its therapeutic benefits and has been soothing countless visitors for more than 300 years. The property also includes a dining area where you can enjoy its signature soba, as well as facilities for an authentic therapeutic spa stay.

Large Bath

An enormous wooden bath made entirely of Japanese cypress, boasting an overwhelming space of 160 tatami mats. No columns stand inside the bath, creating a striking, timeworn, otherworldly atmosphere filled with steam. Four private springs with different temperatures and textures flow into the bathing area, and all are enjoyed as luxurious free-flowing natural hot spring water with no heating or dilution. The water is a cloudy, strongly acidic sulfur spring that warms you from the core and lets you enjoy an extraordinary bathing experience that makes you forget everyday life. Mixed bathing is available, with women-only hours and bathing wear also offered.

Indoor Bath

A spacious indoor bath made entirely of Japanese cypress, set up separately for men and women. It uses a different private spring from the large bath, and you can enjoy fresh, cloudy acidic sulfur spring water as free-flowing natural hot spring water with no dilution or heating. The bathing area is fully equipped with showers and faucets, so you can wash comfortably and savor the famous spring in a calm setting. The acidic water gently envelops the skin, offering outstanding benefits for poor circulation and fatigue recovery, allowing you to fully appreciate the quality of the hot spring.

Most of what we surveyed never even made it onto this site. This book is a further cut from what did. Our editor bathed in every onsen and sauna in it, and wrote only what they confirmed on the ground.
