About Jūhakkō

"Jūhakkō" is a long-established hot spring inn in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, with a history spanning more than 160 years. Standing along the historic Nagara River, it offers the chance to enjoy the high-quality Nagara River Onsen, selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Hot Springs. From the spacious open-air bath overlooking the Nagara River to the richly varied bathing facilities, including the Kura no Yu, a bathhouse renovated from a heavy old storehouse from the Meiji era, as well as medicinal herb baths using a wide variety of Japanese and Chinese medicinal plants and silky baths, guests can spend an exceptionally soothing and restorative time.

Hot SpringONSEN

Nagara River Onsen

This large bathhouse lets you enjoy the reddish-brown cloudy Nagara River Onsen, a rare hot spring found even nationwide, rich in iron and radon. The hot spring changes to a mellow brown as it comes into contact with air, warming the body from the core and helping relieve chills and fatigue. From the open-air bath, you can look out over the clear flow of the Nagara River nearby and the beautifully illuminated Gifu Castle atop Mount Kinka, enjoying a serene bath while immersing yourself in the romance of history.

Most of what we surveyed never even made it onto this site. This book is a further cut from what did. Our editor bathed in every onsen and sauna in it, and wrote only what they confirmed on the ground.
