About Amami Onsen Yamato Hanahana Beach Resort
Amami Onsen Yamato Hanahana Beach Resort is a bathing complex with spectacular views in Yamato Village, Kagoshima Prefecture. Nyuchiguwaho-no-Yu, the only authentic natural onsen on Amami Oshima, rises from 1,600 m (5,249 ft) underground, and you can soak in it in an infinity open-air bath overlooking the East China Sea. There are automatic löyly saunas with sweeping views in both the men’s and women’s baths, an outdoor wood-fired sauna enjoyed in swimsuits, a cold plunge of natural groundwater, and a new kind of extreme experience: a waterslide that sends you diving into a gorge pool. Private onsen cottages rented out to one group at a time and glamping are also on site. Here you become one with the untouched nature of the southern islands and set body and mind free on a truly refreshing stay.
Hot SpringONSEN
Main bathhouse (indoor bath and infinity open-air bath)
A weakly alkaline simple spring rising from deep underground. With a faint scent of sulfur and a well-balanced content of chlorides and metasilicic acid, it has a soft feel on the skin and is a bath for beautiful skin. Water from its own source flows generously into the indoor bath, and the open-air infinity bath offers an overwhelming sense of openness, as if the horizon and the water’s surface melt into one. Soak in pure comfort while gazing at the sea, whose face changes with the time of day.
Private natural onsen family bath
Private natural onsen family baths in cottages set apart from the main onsen building. Each has its own terrace for cooling off in the open air with a view of the sea and a raised tatami area, so you can relax at your leisure without worrying about anyone else. They are fully barrier-free and accessible by wheelchair. Rurikakesu also has its own barrel sauna and cold plunge, letting you keep a special bathing experience all to yourself with the people who matter most.

Automatic löyly sauna
An authentic Finnish sauna in both the men’s and women’s main bathhouses. It uses sauna stones called Kokaseki, and automatic löyly sends out waves of heat and rich steam. Its large windows open wide toward the sea, so you can sweat at your leisure while gazing out over the East China Sea. The appeal is its mild, comfortable heat, which warms body and mind to the core.

Natural groundwater, full of the vitality of the subtropical forest that nurtured it, flows generously and continuously into the cold plunge. The water temperature stays steady year-round, and its soft quality makes for a pleasant cool-down. For women only, there is also an area for cooling off in the open air reached directly from the indoor bath, where you can stretch out on a lounger, feel the breezes from sea and mountain, and savor a blissful totonou, a state of deep relaxation.

Outdoor sauna: Kawasemi Sauna
A mixed-gender sauna in the outdoor area, where swimsuits are worn. Its original wood stove burns locally sourced firewood, and you can watch the flicker of the flames while enjoying löyly you pour yourself. After the sauna, rinse off at the shower provided, then for an extreme experience, sink into the cold plunge right beside it or dive into the pool via the waterslide.
Barrel sauna (in the Rurikakesu private bath)
A private barrel sauna attached to Rurikakesu, a natural onsen cottage rented out to one group at a time. It uses an electric stove by the Finnish maker MISA, and löyly you pour yourself creates a soft mist and a pleasant circulation of heat. The facing benches sit at different heights so you can choose the temperature you like, and ventilation through the slit window allows fine adjustments.

Outdoor cold plunge and pool
The cold plunge in the swimsuit area next to the outdoor Kawasemi Sauna. Here you can cool a body heated to the limit in the sauna all at once while filling your lungs with fresh, wild air. Once the cold plunge has taken the heat away, settle into the viewing space on the sauna’s roof or one of the Adirondack chairs lining the poolside, and enjoy a moment of perfect rest wrapped in Amami’s clear sky and the rustle of the trees.
