Aso Baien SPA RESORT is an onsen resort hotel in Minamiaso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture. At Hinoyama Onsen Dondoko-yu, the bathhouse on its grounds and among the largest in western Japan, you can bathe with a dynamic sense of openness in a bold garden open-air bath skillfully arranged with giant trees and huge lava rocks. The cloudy green-white water, rare in Aso, is a sulfate spring said to help renew the skin. Every one of its many baths is generously filled with natural onsen water fed straight from the source, never recirculated. Along with indoor baths at three different temperatures and a spacious sauna, there is a restaurant where you can savor local specialties such as the akaushi (Aso red wagyu) beef bowl after your bath. Its dynamic design boldly arranges giant trees and huge rocks, and through the windows you can look out over a beautiful garden, a lake, and even Aso’s outer caldera rim. The baths are filled with a sulfate spring said to be especially good for the skin, fed straight from the source, never recirculated, so you can leisurely savor the cloudy green-white water that is distinctive to Aso. A space for quiet, luxurious bathing, wrapped in natural scenery that changes with the seasons.

A vast day-use bathhouse next to the hotel, among the largest in western Japan. Enjoy a wide variety of baths, including indoor baths in three temperature ranges (hot, regular and lukewarm) and a garden open-air bath dramatically arranged with natural timber and huge lava rocks. Every bath is generously filled with a greenish milky-white sulfate spring, fed straight from the source, never recirculated. By day you gaze up at Aso’s magnificent nature, and by night you sink into a dreamlike atmosphere: the appeal lies in making your way around these rustic baths.
SaunaSAUNA
[Dondoko-yu] Sauna
A high-temperature sauna set in the indoor bath area of Dondoko-yu. In between making your way around the indoor baths with three temperature ranges and the rustic garden open-air bath, you can take your time working up a sweat and refreshing yourself. You feel the heat pressing in, yet the setting warms you thoroughly to the core without strain. Alternating between onsen and sauna pleasantly eases away everyday fatigue.
