"Shima Onsen Shima Tamura" is a long-established hot spring ryokan in Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, with a proud history of more than 500 years dating back to the Muromachi period. It has seven private hot spring sources with a generous yield of 1,600 liters per minute, allowing guests to enjoy 100% natural free-flowing hot spring water drawn directly from the source. Known as one of Japan's three great medicinal hot springs for the stomach and intestines, and as a beauty bath, it offers blissful bathing across six distinctive and atmospheric bath areas, including the dramatic two-level open atrium of Iwane no Yu and Shima no Yu, a natural hot spring steam bath that makes use of the source steam.

Public Bath Iraka no Yu

The main public bath that represents Shima Tamura, boasting an overwhelming sense of openness. Its dynamic two-story atrium wooden architecture is striking, with the upper level for women and the lower level for men. Fresh private spring water bubbles up constantly from the bottom of the spacious tub, which is lined with rounded stones. The temperature is adjusted for each bath, allowing guests to fully enjoy the mellow touch of the historic medicinal hot spring known as one of the three great medicinal baths for the stomach and intestines.

Public Bath Iwane no Yu

A beautiful indoor bath with retro tiled tubs and stone flooring that evoke the atmosphere of Taisho romance. Because it is located closest to the inn's private spring source, guests can soak in the freshest water with the richest hot spring minerals. This historic famous bath is said to have been loved by the poet Akiko Yosano, and together with the adjoining natural hot spring steam bath and waterfall shower, it offers a timeless experience of a beauty bath.

An open-air bath built to project out over the valley, embracing guests in magnificent nature. You can enjoy an exquisite soak while looking out over the powerful murmuring of the Shinyugawa River below and the beautiful spray of a waterfall in the distance. The pleasant breeze crossing the river gently cools the flushed body, while the fresh warmth of the private spring brings deep healing. At night, the mountains are illuminated in a dreamlike glow.

A rustic mixed-gender open-air bath set right on the riverbank of the Shinyugawa River, where you can soak at almost the same eye level as the river surface. While listening to the flow of the river close at hand, you can feel a special sense of openness as if becoming one with Shima's abundant nature. It is called the Phantom Bath because it becomes submerged in the riverbed when the water rises, offering a famous free-flowing hot spring experience where you can feel the dynamism of nature with your whole body.

Hinoki Bath Gomoso no Yu

A women-only indoor bath luxuriously built entirely from fragrant, elegant hinoki cypress, in reference to the origin of Shima Onsen, Gomoso no Yu. The dignified yet calming wooden bathhouse is filled with the pleasant scent of hinoki. The colorless, transparent, gentle beauty bath water is poured generously in free-flowing form, leaving the skin moist and smooth while gently easing everyday stress and bodily stiffness.

This gentle steam sauna makes luxurious use only of the heat and hot spring steam from the private source water flowing under the bathtub and beneath the slatted floor. Guests can directly absorb the rich beneficial ingredients contained in the hot spring through the whole body, and experience deep, gradual sweating in a pleasantly warm atmosphere without feeling suffocated.
