About Kyu-Kamura Urabandai

"Kyu-Kamura Urabandai" is a highland resort hotel in Kitashiobara Village, Yama District, Fukushima Prefecture. Its private spring, Kyu-Kamura Onsen, is a cloudy brownish bath rich in iron. In the open-air bath with sunlight streaming in, the seasons of Urabandai—fresh early-summer greenery, autumn leaves, and winter snow-view bathing—frame the tub itself. On clear nights, you can soak while gazing up at the stars. The indoor bath uses the same spring water after filtration, creating a clear bath, and the ability to move between two baths of different colors is one of this inn's unique features. There is also a reclining bath with plain hot water, a novelty bath, and saunas in the men's and women's bath areas. The post-bath lounge has massage chairs, a manga lounge, and a wooden play area with wooden toys. Every room faces Mt. Bandai, letting you immerse yourself in the quiet of the highlands.

Hot SpringONSEN

Large Bath

Kyu-Kamura Onsen is fed by the inn's private spring. The open-air bath is filled with a brownish cloudy bath rich in iron, and the warmth lingers deep in your body even after you get out. The open-air bath surrounded by trees feels wonderfully open, and the seasons of Urabandai—fresh early-summer greenery, autumn foliage, and winter snow-view bathing—frame the tub itself. On clear nights, you can soak while looking up at the stars. The indoor bath is a clear bath made by filtering the same spring water, and the appeal of this bath area lies in the ability to move between two baths with different colors. The spring quality is a sodium-calcium sulfate and bicarbonate spring, said to be beneficial for cuts, burns, and chronic skin conditions.

Reclining Bath

A reclining bath with plain hot water in the indoor bath area. The water is heated separately from the hot spring and laid shallow enough for you to lie back and relax. The time spent with only your shoulders and below in the water, looking up at the ceiling, brings a different kind of release from simply standing and soaking. The same indoor bath area also offers a novelty bath using natural stones, so you can enjoy bathing experiences with a different character depending on the day. Warm up in the hot spring, unwind in the reclining bath, then return to the tub again. That back-and-forth is what gives this large bath its generous sense of space.

SaunaSAUNA

01SAUNA

Sauna

Men'sWomen's

A sauna room provided in each of the men's and women's bath areas. It is open from afternoon into the night, letting you slowly rewarm a body worn out from walking around the highlands. This is a quiet room for working up a good sweat and clearing your head. As is customary at this inn, you are asked to wash your body before entering, and to keep conversation to a minimum inside. That is precisely why only the weight of the steamy air and your own breathing remain. After you sweat it out, head to the relaxation space in the post-bath lounge. Letting yourself sink into a massage chair will gradually release your fatigue.

Most of what we surveyed never even made it onto this site. This book is a further cut from what did. Our editor bathed in every onsen and sauna in it, and wrote only what they confirmed on the ground.
