About Kyukamura Iwate Amihari Onsen

"Kyukamura Iwate Amihari Onsen" is a resort hotel in Shizukuishi Town, Iwate District, Iwate Prefecture. Built on the slopes of Mt. Iwate within the embrace of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, it offers natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source, which has a history of 1,300 years, through five baths inside and outside the building. The milky, bluish-white water carries the scent of sulfur, and its color and aroma change with the seasons and the amount of stream water. From the main bath with indoor and open-air baths, to the indoor bath with a board-lined, old hot-spring-resort feel, to the bath in the annex across the suspension bridge, to the open-air bath along the stream reached by walking through the forest, and the foot bath on the boardwalk, the very act of visiting each distinct bath becomes part of the journey. From the open-air bath, you can look out over the farmland of Shizukuishi and the mountains of the Ou Range, and on clear nights a sky full of stars pours down overhead.

Main Bath

The main bath features a bright indoor bath lit by large windows and an open-air bath with fresh highland air flowing through it. From the open-air bath, you can look out over the farmland of Shizukuishi below and the ridgeline of the Ou Range in the distance, watching the seasons change while you soak. The milky water, scented with sulfur, gently wraps around the skin and slowly warms you to the core. On clear nights, the sky is filled with stars, and in winter it becomes a silent snow-viewing bath, showing different faces depending on the time of day and season. It is open from early morning until late at night, so you can visit as many times as you like during your stay.

Main Bath (Indoor Bath)

This indoor bath strongly preserves the atmosphere of a traditional hot-spring cure resort, with wood-paneled half walls and wood-grain bath buckets and stools lined up. Hot water continually overflows from the small tub, and the slightly hotter water quickly warms the body. In the quiet space, with the scent of sulfur rising through the air and no unnecessary decoration, time passes in quiet focus on the water itself. After bathing, one pleasure is to cool down on the terrace in front of the bath, and in winter to admire the icicles growing under the eaves. Its simple design makes the power of the hot spring feel all the more direct.

Day-Use Hot Spring

This bath is in the annex beyond the wooden boardwalk and suspension bridge from the main building, and guests staying overnight can use it free of charge. There are indoor and open-air baths for both men and women, and from the open-air bath you can take in the farmland of Shizukuishi spreading out beyond the foothills. The hot spring in this area was opened as a hot-spring cure resort in the early Meiji period, and when you lower yourself into the tub, it is easy to understand why people have continued to come here. The building also has a dining area, a spacious lounge, and a comic library, so you can relax at your own pace after bathing. In winter, the open-air bath may be closed.

Open-Air Bath

This open-air bath by the stream and waterfall is reached by walking through the forest from the hotel entrance. Beyond the changing huts for men and women, there is a single rock-built tub that is used as a mixed bath. Surrounded by the sound of the nearby waterfall and stream, you look up to find only the branches, leaves, and sky above. The scene of steam rising from the water feels like another world, impossible to imagine is just a short walk away. Bathing wear is available for purchase, and you may also use your own. It is closed during snowy periods and is a bath enjoyed only in the green season.

Foot Bath

A wooden foot bath set along the boardwalk connecting the hotel and the annex. When you dip your feet into the hot water, the warmth slowly spreads from your legs throughout your body, gently easing away the fatigue of walking. In the distance, you can even see as far as the city of Morioka, and sitting there while listening to the rustling of the trees in the wind makes you lose track of time. It is just right for a short break in the middle of a bath tour or as a final stop after a walk. It is closed during the snowy season and is an attraction from fresh green leaves through late autumn.
