About Kyukamura Kishu-Kada

Kyukamura Kishu-Kada is an onsen resort hotel in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. It stands on high ground in Setonaikai National Park, and the Kada Awashima Onsen that rises here is a sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring. Its slightly slick feel on the skin has earned it the name “the bath for beautiful skin.” Two main bathhouses, each with its own character, switch between men and women daily, and when you sink into the open-air infinity bath, the surface of the water melts seamlessly into the Kitan Strait. There is also a dry sauna and a cold plunge, and after a sweat you can catch your breath in the sea breeze. The madder-red sea chosen as one of Japan’s 100 best sunset spots, the restaurant and terrace overlooking the Kitan Strait, the silhouettes of islands visible from every room: every part of your stay is bound to the sea.

The main bathhouse

The water is a sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring. Its soft, slightly slick feel has earned it the name “the bath for beautiful skin,” and the warmth lingers gently even after you get out. Two main bathhouses of different character switch between men and women daily, and you can make your way around the indoor baths, the panoramic open-air baths and a themed bath that changes by the day. The highlight is the open-air infinity bath: the water, brimming to the rim, appears continuous with the Kitan Strait, and the boundary between sky, sea and yourself quietly disappears. The silhouettes of Tomogashima and Awaji Island, the madder-red sky chosen as one of Japan’s 100 best sunset spots, the stars at night: the view reflected on the water changes with every hour.

Silky Bath

Water filled with fine bubbles wraps the whole body softly with a silk-like touch. As the tub is outdoors, you can give yourself over to the gentle stimulation of the bubbles while feeling the wind from the sea. Rather than working on you strongly, it loosens you gradually from the surface of the body, and as you soak your breathing naturally deepens. It is a tub you will want to slip into between onsen baths, simply to gaze quietly at the view.

A dry sauna in each of the men’s and women’s main bathhouses. Dry heat quietly wraps the skin, and after sitting for a while, sweat slowly beads up from your back. There is no showy staging, just a simple room where you sit with the heat, and a gentle back-and-forth comes naturally: stopping in between baths as you make your way around them, working up a sweat, then returning to the water. Since day bathers can use it too, it is also a dependable room for a sweat after a walk along the Kada shore.

Each bathhouse has one cold plunge. Lower yourself in once the sauna has heated you to the core, and the surface of the skin draws tight while only your heartbeat echoes quietly. There is no need to stay long: get out once the flush has faded, catch your breath at the edge of the open-air bath in the outside air, and the wind from the sea slowly carries off the remaining heat. Cooling down while gazing at the Kitan Strait spread out below leaves an afterglow found only here.
