Oita Beppu City
One of Beppu’s eight onsen districts (Beppu Hatto), this atmospheric onsen area is famous for the sight of steam rising from all over town, a landscape designated an Important Cultural Landscape of Japan. It is also known as the base for the famous Hells of Beppu tour. You can experience a unique onsen culture here, including the traditional hell-steamed cuisine, which uses geothermal steam to cook ingredients, and mushiyu, a steam bath lined with medicinal herbs.
