About Wellbe Fukuoka

Wellbe Fukuoka is a sauna and capsule hotel in Gionmachi, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, renowned as the holy ground of Fukuoka’s sauna scene. The men’s area has six kinds of sauna, including a Finnish sauna, Mori no Sauna (the forest sauna), Karafuro, a herbal steam bath and Sauna Theater Fukuoka, while one of Japan’s coldest cold plunges, at about 5°C (41°F), and an ice sauna at -25°C (-13°F) or below astonish men and women alike.

Finnish sauna

The spacious Finnish sauna that is the face of Wellbe Fukuoka. A convection sauna stove holds a steady high temperature, and automatic löyly, triggered about every 7 minutes, sends waves of steam through the room. Healing music plays in the dim room with no TV, a design uncompromisingly devoted to letting you focus on totonou, that state of deep relaxation.

Mori no Sauna

Wellbe Fukuoka’s most famous sauna. It is a “unit sauna” with a separate mildly cold plunge set inside the sauna room itself, an experience found nowhere else in Japan. The sauna entrance and the plunge entrance are divided by their own doors, so while you sit in the plunge your face still bathes in the hot sauna steam: an exquisite new sensation of a cold body and hot breath.

Mori no Sauna

Wellbe Fukuoka’s most famous sauna. It is a “unit sauna” with a separate mildly cold plunge set inside the sauna room itself, an experience found nowhere else in Japan. The sauna entrance and the plunge entrance are divided by their own doors, so while you sit in the plunge your face still bathes in the hot sauna steam: an exquisite new sensation of a cold body and hot breath.

Karafuro

A private sauna for one person, modeled on the bathhouse of Hokkeji Temple in Nara, built in the Tenpyo period at the wish of Empress Komyo. In a compact Japanese room of about 1.5 tatami mats, laid with zabuton floor cushions like a tatami sitting room, you can focus on meditation alone in dim light with löyly you pour yourself. A philosophical design that revives Japan’s ancient steam-bath culture in a modern sauna, it is highly regarded as a spiritual experience that goes beyond a sauna. It is a one-of-a-kind space where you can take time to turn inward, controlling the heat with löyly you pour yourself.

Wellbe’s famous gurushin plunge (Japanese sauna fans’ word for water below 10°C), one of the coldest in Japan. Its soft water, at an extreme of about 5°C (41°F), delivers such a shock that your whole body feels pain the moment you get in. Its stepped entry makes it easy to get in, and many say 10 to 20 seconds is their limit in this fierce cool-down. At 80–110 cm (about 2.6–3.6 ft) deep, it lets you sink your whole body in.

Used alongside the extra-cold plunge, it lets you choose the cool-down strength that suits you.
