A spa in the sky, looking down over Yokohama
Sky Spa YOKOHAMA, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, is an urban spa on the 14th floor of the Sky Building, directly connected to Yokohama Station. Inside are an authentic löyly sauna built with kelo and abachi wood, a high-temperature sauna heated by an IKI stove, and a sauna theater for meditation and yoga. The cold plunge, crisp and clear at about 15°C (59°F) with amethysts set in it, cools the body gently. In the artificial onsen, Hinoki Calcium Onsen, you are wrapped in calcium carbonate water and can sink into deep relaxation. Besides separate baths for men and women, there is a capsule hotel on site, which has also made it popular as a spa for longer stays.
An artificially made onsen bath using a “high-concentration calcium carbonate bath agent” derived from Futamata Onsen in Hokkaido. It contains onsen components (calcium carbonate ions 95.75%) in the form of onsen sediment (mineral flakes), and works toward better blood flow, beautiful skin and relief from sensitivity to cold. It is an artificial onsen using a bath agent that reproduces the water, not a natural source.
An authentic Finnish sauna, with kelo, the standing dead pine of Finland, on the walls and abachi, a wood with low heat conductivity, for the bench backrests. The room is held evenly at around 90°C (194°F), and the mellow heat particular to kelo spreads through the whole space, so the sweat comes in an enveloping way, without any sharp sting. Automatic löyly every 20 minutes keeps the humidity just right, and staff hold authentic aufguss sessions every day. Minerals and negative ions given off by rock salt deepen the relaxation further, and you can take your time sweating it out while looking over Yokohama.
A sauna room reserved for löyly you pour yourself, with a MONOLITH stove by Finland’s IKI loaded with Finnish peridotite. The walls and benches are hinoki, so you are wrapped in the warmth of the wood as you control the amount of steam at your own pace. Each time you add more löyly the humidity rises, and the sensation of sweat slowly seeping from the surface of your skin grows. Where the main sauna is “a show by professionals,” this is “a sweat led by the user,” a room favored by regulars who come back again and again.
A sauna room of original design that combines two stoves (Twin Tower) with a Bonatherm sauna system and Thermare hot-water pipes, sending heat out evenly from four directions. Set at 25% humidity, its balance of medium temperature and medium humidity wraps the whole body in gentle heat that rarely feels stifling.
A steam room lined with tiles imported directly from Europe, warmed evenly throughout by radiant heat from the heated floor and walls. Temperature, lighting, aromas and the sound of a fountain reach all five senses together, encouraging a slow detox in the steam. Another distinctive touch is the salt provided, which you can take in your hands for a self-massage, and it can also be expected to leave your skin smooth.
Designed for alternating hot and cold bathing after the sauna, the water is kept at about 15°C (59°F). The finely judged temperature, not too cold, pleasantly cools a flushed body. It has the effect of tightening pores opened in the sauna and gently settling the lingering heat.
A cold plunge in the indoor bath area. Amethysts are set at the water inlet and are said to purify the water. At 17°C (63°F), about 2°C (4°F) warmer than the men’s, it is designed so you can stay in slowly and longer without it feeling too cold. It feels clean on the skin and is easy to return to again and again, and with each round between it and the sauna the feeling of lightness in the body grows. After the cold plunge, the rest area with warm beds and reclining chairs lets you spend a time of totonou, a state of deep relaxation, looking out over Yokohama.
