About Kanno Jigoku Ryokan

"Kanno Jigoku Ryokan" is a secluded hot spring inn perched at an elevation of 1,100 m in Kokonoe Town, Oita Prefecture, with a history dating back more than 170 years since its opening. Its biggest attraction is the simple sulfurous cold mineral spring that bubbles up from beneath your feet at 13°C to 14°C. True to the name "Kanno Jigoku," its piercing cold and the fresh scent of sulfur seep through your entire body. In the cold spring area, there is a sauna heated powerfully by a wood-burning stove, allowing guests to experience the ultimate alternating hot-and-cold bathing between the frigid spring and the intensely hot sauna. It is a mixed bathing style enjoyed in swimwear, and a sacred destination visited by devoted sauna enthusiasts from all over Japan. It also offers separate men’s and women’s large baths warmed with firewood, letting you deeply restore body and mind amid the quiet of the mountains.
