Awara Onsen Haiya: The Warmth of a Traditional Ryokan is an onsen inn in Awara, Fukui Prefecture. This long-established inn traces its history back to the Meiji era, and the natural chloride spring water that rises from its own source on the grounds warms you to the core. The newly opened garden sauna recreates an authentic Finnish smoke sauna in a comfortable space built with Fukui-grown timber, alongside a cold plunge made of Shakudani-ishi stone and an open area for cooling off in the open air. There is also a free tourmaline warm-stone room and a barrier-free private bath, so you can spend indulgent, unhurried hours with a Japanese garden that changes through the seasons.
Hot SpringONSEN
[Main bathhouse] Hidamari-no-Yu
Natural chloride spring water flows abundantly from the inn’s own source on the grounds. The spacious indoor bath looks out on beautiful garden stones, and in the open-air rock bath you can soak while taking in the rich nature of each season. There is also a reclining bath where you can lie back and gaze at the garden, and the soft, heat-retaining water eases your body to the core.

A spacious bathhouse where the wooden interior creates a classic onsen atmosphere. The smooth chloride spring water wraps gently around your skin, and the warmth lingers long after you step out. In the open-air bath, you can watch a cascade of flowing hot water and spend blissfully relaxing time in the fresh air.

A barrier-free private bath with no steps, so you can move from the washing area in a wheelchair, and handrails throughout. With a spacious changing room, it lets you spend private time with family or someone special. Amid the charm of a traditional Japanese house and a beautiful Japanese-style space, you can enjoy fresh natural onsen water whenever and for as long as you like. A serious sauna that recreates an authentic Finnish smoke sauna around striking, oversized stones. The walls and deck are made of beautifully grained Fukui-grown timber, so you can relax wrapped in the warmth of wood. The upper and lower benches differ in temperature, letting you choose your spot and enjoy the invigorating heat and the waves of heat at your own pace. Garden sauna cold plunge
A round cold plunge set right beside the garden sauna. The tub is lavishly made of Shakudani-ishi, a rare and prized Fukui stone also known as Echizen-aoishi. The beautiful bluish texture of the stone gives it a cool, fresh look, and the water brings your flushed body down to a crisp, refreshing chill. Chairs for cooling off in the open air are lined up right next to it, so the path to ultimate relaxation flows naturally.

A free warm-stone room you can walk straight into from the changing rooms of Hidamari-no-Yu and Komorebi-no-Yu.
