About Hoshi Onsen Chojukan

"Hoshi Onsen Chojukan" is a historic hot spring inn founded in 1875 in Minakami Town, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture. Tucked away deep in Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park, this secluded inn is a legendary hidden hot spring retreat, and its wooden main building, designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, along with the Rococo-style large baths, reflects a rich sense of history. The signature large bath, Hoshino-yu, is an extremely rare spring that naturally wells up from beneath the rounded stones laid on the bottom of the tub. With no added water, no heating, and no circulation, you can savor this 100% pure, living hot spring in complete tranquility to your heart's content.

Large Bath Hoshino-yu

A wooden large bath in the Rococo style that retains the atmosphere of the Meiji era, this is a bath you can actually soak in and a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Fresh 100% pure hot spring water bubbles up naturally from between the rounded stones laid on the bottom of the tub in this extremely rare free-flowing spring known as a spring that wells up from beneath your feet. The four tubs each have slightly different temperatures, and the water is characterized by its gently warm, soft feel. In this space wrapped in silence, you can enjoy luxurious therapeutic bathing time, simply facing the hot water itself.

Large Bath Chojuno-yu

A small, atmospheric large bath quietly standing right beside the clear stream of Hoshi River. In the suitability assessment conducted by the Japan Natural Hot Spring Examination Organization, it received perfect scores in all six categories, including the source water and the water supply and drainage system, making it an exceptionally pure and natural famous bath. The water feels remarkably mellow and soft on the skin, and during day-use bathing hours it is open as the women's-only Gojin-buro.

Most of what we surveyed never even made it onto this site. This book is a further cut from what did. Our editor bathed in every onsen and sauna in it, and wrote only what they confirmed on the ground.
