Naraya

A hot spring inn where a Yumori prepares exceptionally mellow Shirahata Source, enjoyed in a space rich with history

Gunma Kusatsu Town

"Naraya" is a long-established, prestigious inn representing Kusatsu Onsen, founded in Meiji 10 (1877). It stands just beside Yubatake, the center of the hot spring town, and the entire building is covered in tatami, creating an atmosphere steeped in Japanese elegance. Its pride is the precious Shirahata Source, the oldest hot spring source in Kusatsu. Here, the onsen specialist craftsman known as a Yumori gently cools the steaming hot spring water in two bathtubs on the property and lets it rest overnight, transforming Kusatsu’s strongly acidic water into an exceptionally gentle, silky-smooth Bihaku no Yu that is remarkably kind to the skin. It is served as 100% natural flowing hot spring water.

Hot Spring & Bath Information

Large Public Bath Okumigage no Yu

TypeNatural Hot Spring

Flow-through

A signature large public bath at Naraya, set within a beautiful heavy timber building infused with history. It was named after the story of Okumigage no Yu, from which Kusatsu hot spring water was drawn and presented to the Tokugawa shoguns in the Edo period. Carefully temperature-controlled through the traditional skill of a Yumori, it allows guests to enjoy Shirahata Source, astonishingly mellow and gently softened, as free-flowing natural hot spring water. The high ceiling and the wooden warmth rising through the steam create a deeply atmospheric bath.

Large Public Bath Hana no Yu Indoor Bath and Open-Air Bath

TypeNatural Hot Spring

Flow-through

A spacious large public bath with a gentle, serene Japanese atmosphere, featuring both an expansive indoor bath and an open-air bath surrounded by greenery. Shirahata Source, drawn directly from Yubatake, is rested by a Yumori and turned into a softly cloudy bath with an exceptionally gentle, soothing feel, then served as free-flowing natural hot spring water. The open-air bath is appealing for the chance to relax while feeling the trees of the garden and Kusatsu's crystal-clear air, and to fully savor the rich, strongly acidic power of Kusatsu's original hot spring, a different kind of experience from weakly alkaline, beauty-enhancing waters.

Private Baths Hi, Fu, Mi

TypeNatural Hot Spring

Flow-through

Three private baths with distinct atmospheres: Hi, Fu, and Mi. In these modern private tubs accented with Shigaraki ware and cypress, guests can exclusively enjoy Shirahata Source, expertly prepared to an exquisite mellowness by the craftsman Yumori, as 100% natural flowing hot spring water. Ideal for couples, families, or anyone seeking a private bathing experience where they can quietly and fully appreciate an exceptional beauty bath without worrying about others around them.
