Kyoto Kyoto City
A Kyoto-style tatami hot spring inn with five private open-air baths
"Kyoto Umekoji Kadensho" is a hot spring inn in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. The entire building is covered with tatami flooring, and guests leave their shoes at the entrance, allowing them to walk barefoot through the inn’s Kyoto-style interiors. The public bath centers on a cypress indoor bath and a lying-down bath filled with natural hot spring water, while the open-air bath and barrel bath create a sense of openness that makes you forget you are in the middle of the city. The men’s bath has a dry sauna, the women’s bath has a steam sauna, and both bathing areas also include bedrock bathing. Five private open-air baths with different atmospheres require no reservation and can be used free of charge as many times as you like during your stay, as long as they are available. An ice pop at the post-bath lounge, a library filled with materials on Kyoto, and a viewing lounge overlooking Kyoto Tower quietly enrich the time after bathing. Its excellent location right in front of JR Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station is another major advantage.

The indoor bath and lying-down bath, framed in cypress, are filled with natural hot spring water. The soft water wraps around your skin as if gliding over it, gradually storing warmth deep in your body. In the open-air bath and barrel bath beside it, the Kyoto breeze brushes the surface of the water, creating a feeling of openness so complete that you forget you are in the middle of the city. Moving from one bath to another amid the Japanese-style setting, both travel fatigue and chill gently melt away.

A private open-air bath where you can enjoy the same natural hot spring water as the public bath all to yourself. Two types are available: a barrel-shaped bath carved from wood and a rustic stone-built bath full of natural character. No reservation is needed, and if it is available, you can use it free of charge as many times as you like during your stay. The quiet pleasure of sinking in up to your shoulders without worrying about anyone else, while enjoying the stillness of the night or the crisp morning air, is a luxury unique to this inn.

Three different private open-air baths are available separately from the natural hot spring. Each has its own distinct character: a wooden tub with the fresh fragrance of hiba cypress, a spacious bath where two people can sit side by side comfortably, and a ceramic tub where fine bubbles softly envelop the skin in white. These are also free and require no reservation. The enjoyment of a Kyoto night begins the moment you choose your bath.

This dry sauna is located in the men’s public bath. Its dry heat reaches the skin directly, and before long you begin to sweat after taking a seat. In the quiet interior, free of unnecessary noise, the excitement of travel and the fatigue of the day are gradually carried away by the heat. It cannot be used late at night, so it is best to enjoy one round in the evening and another in the fresh morning air.

This steam sauna is located in the women’s public bath. Fine steam fills the room with a white haze, and the moist heat gently reaches both the throat and the skin. Because it lacks the sharp intensity of a dry sauna, it feels less stifling and warms you deeply without disturbing your breathing. It is a time to surrender to the sensation of soft, moisturized skin and quietly close your eyes.

Bedrock bathing is available in both the men’s and women’s public baths. When you lie down, the gentle warmth radiating from the stones quietly spreads from your back, slowly drawing out the sweat that had been sleeping deep within your body. Unlike a sauna, it does not feel especially intense, so you can relax deeply without upsetting your breathing. As you alternate between hot water and perspiration, the stiffness from travel gradually loosens from your body’s core.
