The three private baths lined up on the 9th floor are each made of a different material — ceramic, brick, and hinoki cypress. Not just the texture against your skin but the way the heat is transmitted differs from one to the next. No reservation is needed; if one is free, simply close the door and it's yours alone. The water is a sodium chloride spring. Its rich salt content wraps the skin smoothly, and the warmth from the core lingers long after you step out. Beyond the tub, the Hakodate cityscape stretches out, with sea breezes carrying the steam away. The natural hot spring communal bath on the upper floor features an indoor hinoki bath, a reclining bath, an open-air bath, and a barrel bath, all lined up together, along with a dry sauna.

The water drawn here is a chloride spring from Niseko Konbu Onsen. Smooth to the touch, it has a quality that warms the body from the core, and the large communal bath, Meisen no Yu, lets natural light in through large windows. What sets this property apart is that it offers not one but two ways to enjoy this water in solitude. The private baths have an unobstructed view of the forest, and some suites and special rooms come with their own open-air onsen bath or a bath with a view. Step out onto the deck terrace and you'll catch the breeze passing through the forest and the murmur of the river, letting you soak whenever you like, day or night. Guest rooms also come with a sauna where you can perform your own löyly.

Not many inns let you compare different tub materials during a single stay. On top of that, every guest room comes with its own natural hot spring bath made of hiba cypress, so whether it's the middle of the night or the crack of dawn, whenever the mood strikes becomes bathing time. The water is a sodium chloride spring from Jozankei — colorless, clear, and gentle, with the salt content slowing sweat evaporation so warmth lingers long after you get out. The open-air bath attached to the guest room lets you take in Akan's four seasons all to yourself, with unlimited entry whenever you please. For those who'd rather bathe without any chance of being seen, a private family bath is also available. On the day our editors visited, the view from the 8th-floor open-air bath in the main building showed Lake Akan under clear skies, its water a transparent blue, with Mount Meakan standing directly ahead. The water feels soft against the skin — warm up, take in the view, and when you start to feel a chill, sink back in again. It's the kind of onsen where that cycle becomes hard to stop. The spring flows directly from the source, and a sauna is also available.

Spring water that wells up naturally by the river on the property flows directly, untreated, into both the private baths and the in-room baths. The three private baths — brick, hinoki cypress, and ceramic — are free to use and require no reservation. Just check the sign at the entrance to see if one is free, and step in whenever the mood strikes. The in-room bath with a view is also made of hinoki cypress and flows directly from the source; rooms facing the river open onto views of the Akan River and deep forest. Since fresh water fills the tub at the press of a button, you can bathe again whether it's early morning or the middle of the night. It's a simple spring rich in iron, and the water can turn cloudy depending on the season.

There are three private baths free for overnight guests to use, each built differently: a rock bath, a jar-shaped bath, and a hinoki cypress bath. One of the baths offers a view of the Furano mountain range from the tub, letting you claim the scenery outside the window for your private time as well. All three baths feature a powder room and washing area separated by an interior door, ensuring privacy is never compromised. The water is drawn from the inn's own sodium chloride spring source, with a soft touch that warms the body thoroughly and keeps the heat lingering after you leave the bath. The large communal bath on the top, 9th floor offers views of the Tokachi mountain range from the indoor bath and the Furano townscape from the open-air bath. A sauna is also available.

There are two private baths. Komanoyu features its own open-air bath where you can take in the clear air and natural quiet while facing the lake. Marunoyu is an indoor bath fed directly from the source, and it also has a sauna. Further along, past the large communal bath via a connecting corridor, there's a natural wild bath that wells up from underfoot. Separated from Lake Shikotsu by only a rocky outcrop, its water depth shifts with the lake's water level. On our visit, the open-air spring water was golden in color, the mineral content so concentrated it even tinted the tub itself.
