Hyogo Kobe City
A miraculous hot spring where ancient seawater from 6,000,000 years ago gushes up from 60 km underground
Arima Onsen Taiko no Yu is one of the largest hot spring theme parks in western Japan, located in Arima-cho, Kita Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The facility is themed around the Arima hot springs loved by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and offers 26 kinds of baths plus bedrock spa (ganbanyoku). You can enjoy three different springs at once: the miraculous Kinsen, a golden spring with the highest salt concentration in Japan emerging from ancient seawater 6,000,000 years ago from 60 km underground; the Ginsen, a radium-bearing weakly radioactive cold spring from the Rokko mountain range; and an artificial carbonated therapeutic spring. The main public bath’s Ultimate Lava Sauna uses Sakurajima lava and germanium on the walls and floor, a Kansai first. The room doubles as an all-round sauna/bedrock experience, with a power crystal (quartz) placed in the center to create a calming atmosphere. An auto löyly every 12 minutes brings the lights down and leaves the crystal illuminated, creating a meditation-like sauna space. You can also enjoy the rustic cold plunge pool cooled from the Ginsen, called Ginsen Rock Spring. Dining ranges from kaiseki restaurants to festival-stall–style food courts. It is a 10-minute walk from Arima Onsen Station, with a free shuttle bus available and free parking for 4 hours.

Kinsen is a miraculous hot spring whose ancient seawater emerged 6,000,000 years ago from 60 km underground and has the highest hot spring mineral concentration in Japan. A serpentine rock layer containing ancient seawater was carried down by the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate to the upper mantle, dehydrated, and then surfaced, making this a rare plate-connected spring in the world. It was discovered following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Because the active mineral components are extremely concentrated, please be cautious of excessive bathing reactions.

Arima Onsen’s Ginsen is a simple weakly radioactive cold spring containing radium, characterized by its colorless, transparent, and mild feel. Compared to Kinsen it is gentler, making it suitable for longer soaks and alternating hot-and-cold bathing, and it is said to be effective for promoting circulation and metabolism. At Taiko no Yu, Ginsen is offered in various forms—standalone, blended with Kinsen, as footbaths, and full-body baths—including the hyotan open-air bath, Ginsen relaxation bath, and the blended baths of Tenka no Yu.

Germanium on the floor and high-emissivity Sakurajima lava on the walls are used in the sauna, a Kansai first. The space functions as an all-round sauna/bedrock experience where you can enjoy both sauna and bedrock spa at the same time. A power crystal (quartz) placed in the center of the room creates a calming atmosphere. Every 12 minutes an auto löyly occurs, the lighting is dimmed and only the crystal is illuminated. This meditation-style setup allows focused sauna time.

Uses 100% of the sacred spring water that gushes from the upper stream of Myorakuji, coming directly from the Rokko foothills. This is a rustic cold plunge pool made by non-heated cooling of the Ginsen. Being able to enjoy natural hot spring water even in the cold plunge is a pleasing feature. The pool recreates the appearance of water flowing out from the gaps in the source rock.
