From single venues tucked into city buildings to large complexes where you can spend the day alongside an onsen, Osaka offers so many options that choosing can actually get harder. Our editorial team, which researches sauna and onsen facilities across Japan and visits them in person, has narrowed the field down to just 7. Any of them is a safe bet. sauna hanazono

An automatic löyly sauna located in the outdoor area of the large bath. It features a Sawo tower-style stove and a Bona stove, and is characterized by its spacious interior and three-tier bench layout. With automatic löyly and hot-air equipment, the entire room is designed to be filled with heat and steam in a short time.

Self löyly sauna

Self löyly sauna

A sauna in the men’s bathing area where self löyly is possible. You can pour water onto the sauna stones whenever you like, directly enjoying the rising steam and spreading heat. It is suited to times when you want to quietly face yourself and work up a disciplined sweat.

sauna kukka

sauna kukka

The main attraction on the 3rd floor’s swimwear-required area, this giant panoramic sauna can accommodate more than 80 people. In the spacious interior, you can even lie down and relax, and aufguss events and yoga classes are held regularly. It is a highly entertaining space where many people gather and share the heat and sense of unity of the sauna.

Private Sauna oma (3F, reservation only)

Private Sauna oma (3F, reservation only)

A reservation-only private sauna with variations for 1 to 3 people. It includes special rooms supervised by Katsuki Tanaka, the author of the manga Sado. Using Bluetooth speakers to play your favorite music, you can enjoy the sauna at your own pace without worrying about others, in a luxurious private space.

Editors' comment

Onsen water drawn from 1,000 meters underground is also used in the cold plunge bath, which is wide and deep enough for roughly 20 people, with a gentle feel against the skin. There are two sauna rooms. One features a large central stove that automatically cycles through löyly and fan-driven heat, raising the humidity and intensifying the sensation. The other has no TV, dim lighting, and a no-talking rule; on the top of its three tiers, all you hear is your own breathing. The open-air area has more than 20 chairs lined up, so you can sit right down after stepping out of the cold plunge bath. There's also a large sauna on the 3rd floor where swimwear is required.

Yokozuna Sauna

Yokozuna Sauna

The spacious main sauna on the men's side. The seating is deep, allowing you to stretch out your legs and relax comfortably. Far-infrared heat and the sauna stones' radiant heat envelop the body powerfully, promoting a thorough sweat from deep within. During the regularly held staff-led heat-wave löyly service, you can be bathed from head to toe in aromatic fragrance and pleasant hot air, and work up a refreshing flow of large beads of sweat.

Konatsu Sauna

Konatsu Sauna

A full-fledged Rocky Sauna installed in the women's bath area. It features a dynamic auto löyly system that pours plenty of water from above, filling the room with comfortable humidity and heat. Heat-wave services using aromatic water are also offered by staff, and the rich fragrance helps release daily fatigue and stress along with sweat.

Jyuen Sauna

Jyuen Sauna

A men's-only auto löyly sauna quietly standing in the open-air area. The soundless, TV-free space is kept dim, allowing for a stoic, deeply immersive experience in which you can confront yourself. Powerful auto löyly activates at regular intervals, sending high-temperature steam pouring into the room all at once. The overwhelming heat wraps around your body and draws out sweat like a waterfall.

Editors' comment

In the open-air area's steam sauna, closing the door plunges the room into near-total darkness. There's no TV — just your own breathing. Built to seat about twelve people in a circle around the stove, an automatic löyly begins every twelve minutes. Rather than releasing all at once, it pours out over nearly a full minute like a shower, so the heat builds in layers, growing noticeably more intense by the end. The cold plunge bath is on the indoor bath side, at roughly 17–18°C. It takes a few steps to reach, but once you're done, you can lie down in the spacious open-air area and ease straight into fresh-air relaxation. On the men's side, there's also a separate, spacious sauna room featuring staff-led aufguss sessions.

[Men] Nettoppu Jumuya

[Men] Nettoppu Jumuya

A spacious large sauna room equipped with an iki stove. The interior has been completely renovated, and its high ceiling allows you to feel the heat waves more directly. Every hour at 30 minutes past the hour, staff-led löyly service (aufguss) is held, and the intense heat wave containing negative ions rapidly raises the perceived room temperature and triggers explosive sweating.

[Men] Netsu no Shitsu

[Men] Netsu no Shitsu

A high-temperature sauna equipped with a convection-style stove that allows self-löyly. It uses a low entrance door around waist height, designed to keep the heat inside. The sauna benches are placed high up after climbing a set of steps, so the ceiling feels close and the heat is more directly felt. The chic black-themed interior lets you quietly face yourself, almost like meditating. A dedicated standing shower is also available.

Editors' comment

Right after the aufguss session that runs every 30 minutes, the main sauna room is humid enough that the white steam is visible to the eye, and you'll be sweating within a minute of sitting down. The other room offers a contrast: in this self-service löyly sauna, the stove sits below seat level, so rising steam hits your entire body directly. There's no blue lighting here — just heat, air, benches, and people. Guests sit in a row, eyes closed, perfectly still. The cold plunge bath uses water drawn from underground, deep enough to fully submerge yourself, and the soft water wraps around your body. The open-air area is lined with many chairs, so you can sit down right where you step out.

bouna sauna

bouna sauna

A bouna sauna with heaters built into the space under the benches and elsewhere. During the periodically activated auto-löyly, a red lamp lights up and intense waves of heat and plenty of steam fill the room. More powerful heat than the thermometer suggests wraps around your whole body, and sweat pours out like a waterfall in a short time. You can also enjoy a self-made heat wave with the provided uchiwa fan, making this a scorching space where you can push yourself to the limit.

Editors' comment

The Bona Sauna, with heaters built in under the benches, feels hotter than the 90°C shown on the thermometer. An automatic löyly kicks in every 10 minutes, and as the lighting shifts, a wave of heat spreads through the room. Even on the morning our editorial team visited, the heat pushed back the moment we stepped inside. Just one step from the sauna room is an ice bath 140cm deep, kept cold as ice is continually dropped in from above. Submerge yourself fully, then climb the stairs to the rooftop, where a chimney and Osaka's wide-open sky await. It's the contrast of hot and cold this Kyobashi sento has built up over the years.

Heatwave Sweat Sauna

Heatwave Sweat Sauna

A full-fledged high-temperature sauna that warms you from the core with the heat of far infrared rays and promotes vigorous sweating. The hourly auto löyly sends rising steam through the room, instantly raising the perceived temperature and bringing a wave of invigorating heat. aufguss by staff is also performed daily, offering a dynamic sauna experience wrapped in heat and aroma.

Meditation Sauna

Meditation Sauna

A calm, quiet space where you can deeply face yourself in meditation. Self-löyly is possible, letting you pour water onto the sauna stones yourself and adjust the humidity and perceived temperature to your preference. In addition, by pressing a dedicated switch, heat waves are released, leading you toward ultimate relaxation and deep totonou in a tranquil environment.

Editors' comment

In the high-temperature sauna, an automatic löyly kicks in every hour, and staff-led aufguss sessions run daily. The meditation sauna allows self-service löyly, with a dedicated switch that releases a wave of heat at the push of a button. The mist sauna, filled with the scent of herbal medicine, keeps things gentle, and salt is provided so you can rub it onto your skin as you sit. With three distinct characters of heat, the water that receives you afterward isn't just one option either. There's a deep, ultra-cold plunge bath set lower than average, a standard cold plunge bath, and a single-person cold plunge bath right beside the open-air meditation sauna, from which you can move straight into green, open-air relaxation after your soak.

iki stoves and ZIEL stoves piled high with sauna stones fill the room with waves of heat, and the upper level delivers sharp heat while the lower level offers gentler sweating. At the löyly service held every hour on the half hour, heat and steam rise all at once, opening up your sweat glands from head to toe.

Neno Shitsu

Neno Shitsu

A three-tier women's self-löyly sauna equipped with METOS ZIEL. Its stepped structure makes use of heat convection, letting you enjoy different sensations depending on where you sit. With self-löyly of three ladles per round, you can control the amount of steam yourself and create time to slowly ease into a calm, deeply relaxing state in a quiet environment.

Editors' comment

There are two sauna rooms. One is a spacious steam room heated by two stoves; the other is a self-service löyly room where you pour water at your own pace. Both keep the lighting dim, and talking is not allowed. Close your eyes on the upper bench and all that remains is the pure sensation of heat, as if inside a meditation chamber. The cold plunge bath is located right outside the sauna room, filled with pumped groundwater to a depth of 90cm. The water feels soft on the skin while still chilling you to the core. The open-air area has plenty of chairs, so you can move straight into fresh-air relaxation without waiting.

[Asia Zone] Tea Ceremony Area

[Asia Zone] Tea Ceremony Area

A Japanese-style sauna room set within the Tea Ceremony Area. Hojicha löyly is performed here, and the toasty, deep aroma of tea leaves fills the room. In the calm atmosphere, you can take your time sweating while feeling a distinctly Japanese elegance. The scent of tea enhances relaxation, allowing you to spend a quiet, gentle time that contrasts with the sauna theater.

[Europe Zone] Sauna Theater (Germany Area)

[Europe Zone] Sauna Theater (Germany Area)

A huge sauna located in the Germany Area and one of the largest of its kind in Japan. In a stunning space that accommodates 140 people, aufguss shows tightly synchronized with music and visual lighting are held regularly. An automatic löyly service is also in operation, with heat and steam rolling in like waves in stages. This is a highly entertaining sauna experience that stimulates sight, hearing, and touch all at once. You can work up a thorough sweat while sharing a sense of unity with a large group.

Editors' comment

The Sauna Theater, which holds 140 people, is so spacious that stepping inside feels like walking into a concert hall. Yet the heat circulates well, reaching every seat with real intensity, avoiding the common letdown of large rooms where the back rows never get warm enough. Through the door, the open-air area features three types of cold plunge baths, each deep and wide enough to submerge your whole body. With plenty of chairs and loungers, you won't need to wander around looking for a seat. On the same floor, a Finnish area with log-cabin styling and birch accents offers gentler heat. The floors available to men and women rotate monthly.

IKI Sauna

IKI Sauna

Amza's main sauna, an open, glass-fronted dry sauna with a giant IKI stove standing at the center like a sacred object. Its overwhelming presence, together with the massive stack of sauna stones in a spacious room for 30 people, creates anticipation for an otherworldly heat experience. In addition to auto-löyly every 15 minutes, projection-mapped visuals and powerful sound design are synchronized with each löyly moment, delivering an entertainment-style sauna experience unlike almost anything else in Japan.

Meditative Finnish Sauna

Meditative Finnish Sauna

A Finnish sauna filled with steam rising from water-sprayed sauna stones, harmonizing mild heat and humidity. Its gentle temperature setting and quiet environment without a TV create the perfect space for inner reflection and meditation. Self-löyly is available, so you can pour your preferred amount of aromatherapy water onto the stones and enjoy a steam experience all your own. In contrast to the intense löyly events of the IKI sauna, this balance of stillness and motion is one of Amza's attractions.

Goel Steam Sauna

Goel Steam Sauna

A visually distinctive steam sauna whose walls and floor are decorated with colorful mosaic tiles reminiscent of Spanish architect Gaudí's Park Güell. Radiant heat warms the seats and entire walls, while humid steam slowly heats the body. True to the name "herbal," the room is filled with fragrant herbal steam that encourages full-body perspiration.

Editors' comment

A massive IKI stove sits at the center of the room, releasing heat with an automatic löyly every 15 minutes. At that exact moment, projection mapping visuals and sound sync up in this glass-fronted sauna room that fits 30 people. Its counterpart, the Finnish sauna, has no TV, and in the quiet of what feels like a log cabin, you can pour your own löyly at your own pace. There are three types of cold plunge baths, with water constantly overflowing to keep quality clear. Step out for some fresh air and the scent of grilled yakitori drifts by as you look down over the bustling streets of Minami, Osaka.

River / Kura Sauna

River / Kura Sauna

The standout feature is the structure: water flows at the back of the sauna room, inspired by Horikawa, and you can dive straight into the cold plunge bath. The feeling of escaping while fully immersed up to your head is unlike anything else. Auto löyly raises the humidity and gently draws out sweat. It is connected internally with the Kura Sauna, and they are used as one space during heat-wave service.

Forest Sauna

Forest Sauna

A hot, humid steam sauna that creates the atmosphere of a calm, dim forest. Deadwood-like objects and natural light reproduce forest humidity, and it boasts the highest temperature in the facility. Designed to help you totonou when combined with the dedicated pot-style cold plunge bath. The moist heat wraps around your body.

Water Surface Sauna

Water Surface Sauna

A low-temperature, moderately humid sauna that is easy to relax in. Lie back on the ergonomic bench and enjoy the sparkle of water reflected on the ceiling. Close to the indoor relaxation area, it offers a calm setting for taking your time and sweating comfortably.

Tea Room Sauna

Tea Room Sauna

A tasteful recreation of a tea room, with tatami flooring, earthen walls, and raised seating. On top of the stove, which is designed to resemble a hearth, there is a teapot-shaped container, and tea is poured into it so you can enjoy tea löyly.

Annex Sauna

Annex Sauna

Self löyly is available, allowing you to adjust the humidity and temperature to your liking. It also supports whisking service, so you can enjoy an authentic sauna experience. The heat is on the higher side, making it ideal for those who want to work up a good sweat.

Garden Sauna

Garden Sauna

A sauna facing the semi-open-air bathing area. Fresh air comes in through the large windows, creating a sense of openness similar to a virtual outdoor bath. It is close to the area where conversation is allowed, so you can enjoy it with friends.

Editors' comment

In the River Sauna, water flows right into the room, and you can dive straight through it to exit into the outdoor cold plunge bath without ever opening a door — a layout you won't find almost anywhere else. The Forest Sauna delivers steam well above 90°C, and even the lowest of its three-tiered benches felt like all I could handle. The jar-shaped cold plunge bath just outside is 12°C and over 140cm deep. The Tea Room Sauna has tatami flooring, with tea continuously dripping from a giant kettle mounted above the stove, keeping steam rising nonstop. Each of the 6 rooms has its own distinct design, and the variety of cold plunge baths is equally rich. Just a few minutes on foot from Shinsaibashi Station.
