In January 2026, from the hot spring and sauna facilities I actually visited across Japan, I comprehensively evaluated the quality of the saunas, the quality of the cold plunge baths, the quality of the natural hot spring water, the outdoor relaxation environment, the food, the overall atmosphere of the facility, and the customer service. I will introduce the facilities that left a particularly strong impression in a ranking format.

📍 Hyogo
🥇 1TOP1

Kobe Sauna & Spa

Kobe Sauna & Spa

Located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, this is a long-established sauna I have been visiting since high school. The Finnish sauna, enveloped in the scent of kelo wood and vihta directly imported from Finland, offers an exquisite experience in a meditative space without TV or background music. The combination of the 11.7°C cold plunge bath and outdoor relaxation is perfect. I visited during Typhoon No. 18 with a 24-hour unlimited sauna stay plan, enjoying an outdoor bath in the typhoon rain at night and a private morning sauna at 4:30 AM with three sets. The facility offers a sense of security like a home sauna, with the natural hot spring 'Kamino-yu', exquisite ginger pork and fried chicken, and naps in the reclining room.

📍 Osaka
🥈 2TOP2

SPAWORLD HOTEL&RESORT

SPAWORLD HOTEL&RESORT

Located in Naniwa Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, SPAWORLD HOTEL&RESORT is one of Japan's largest hot spring complex resorts. The theater sauna, which can accommodate 140 people, provides excellent heat convection in a spacious area, allowing you to feel the heat no matter where you sit. The three types of cold plunge baths at 8°C, 15°C, and 20°C refreshingly cool your body in the open-air area. In the Finland area, you can relax in a calm space with a forest concept. The European and Asian hot spring areas switch between men and women monthly, offering a fresh experience each time.

📍 Kyoto
🥉 3TOP3

Sauna & Capsule Hotel Ruma Plaza

Sauna & Capsule Hotel Ruma Plaza

Located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Sauna & Capsule Hotel Rumaplaza offers the 'ultimate sauna experience in the heart of Gion'. Spanning two floors, the 6th and 7th, it provides a 90°C löyly sauna and two types of cold plunge baths at 15°C and 20°C. The rooftop outdoor relaxation space offers a liberating time while overlooking the streets of Gion. On this day, the self-löyly in the Finnish-style sauna and the refreshment in the cold plunge bath were exceptional. It is an urban sauna facility that heals both body and mind between Kyoto sightseeing.

Located in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, Aratae no Yu is a resort hot spring facility overlooking the Kominato Strait. With a variety of baths including natural hot springs, carbonated baths, pot baths, and jet baths, it is a facility that excites sauna enthusiasts. The open-air bath with a panoramic view of the sea is spectacular, and the outdoor relaxation while feeling the natural breeze is a blissful moment. The sauna is at a comfortable temperature, allowing you to sweat pleasantly, and the moment of forgetting time in the infinity chair after bathing is irresistible. With a well-equipped relaxation lounge and dining area, it is a supreme facility that gently unwinds both body and mind.

📍 Nara
🏅 5

Nijinoyu Nishiyamato

Nijinoyu Nishiyamato

Located in Kamimaki Town, Kitakatsuragi District, Nara Prefecture, Niji no Yu Nishi-Yamato offers a natural hot spring with a free-flowing source and authentic sauna. The high-temperature sauna with radon ceramic plates delivers heat deep to the core of your body, and the deep cold plunge bath quietly lowers your body temperature. The open-air source pot bath, with the unique heat retention of chloride springs, allows you to enjoy the afterglow of bathing for a long time. With the exquisite cycle of heat and cold, it provides a time to sharpen the mind and body and achieve a calm state. Once visited, it is a facility with a nostalgic charm that makes you want to return.

📍 Kyoto
🏅 6

Hakusan-yu Takatsuji Branch

Hakusan-yu Takatsuji Branch

Located in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Hakusanyu Takatsuji is a public bath with underground water flowing freely. The ultra-high-temperature dry sauna at 115°C is so hot that sweat bursts out instantly, and the cold plunge bath with underground water cascading like a waterfall from a lion's mouth gently cools your entire body. The outdoor relaxation in the open-air bath feels like experiencing the Kyoto breeze in the nude. On my first visit, I was moved by the smoothness of the underground water and scooped it up with my hand to drink. It is the best public bath facility where you can enjoy Kyoto's No.1 cold plunge bath and public bath experience.

📍 Kyoto
🏅 7

Sagano Onsen Tenzan-no-Yu

Sagano Onsen Tenzan-no-Yu

Located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Sagano Onsen Tenzan no Yu offers a private source hot spring flowing freely. The natural hot spring, gushing from 1,200 meters underground, can be enjoyed in both indoor and open-air baths, and the spacious theater sauna accommodates 50 people comfortably. With a 16°C deep cold plunge bath and outdoor relaxation space, the refreshing grapefruit scent during aufguss was pleasant, rejuvenating the core of the body. On this day, I was deeply healed by the surprising comfort, making it truly the best reset facility.

📍 Osaka
🏅 8

Natural Hot Spring Nobehanoyu Tsuruhashi

Natural Hot Spring Nobehanoyu Tsuruhashi

Located in Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, Natural Hot Spring Nobuta no Yu Tsuruhashi offers an urban hot spring facility with a rural mountain atmosphere. The main sauna offers aufguss every 30 minutes, and there is also a sauna where self-löyly is possible. The soft cold plunge bath using underground water is wide and deep, and the outdoor relaxation space is well-equipped. The time spent sitting in a chair after the sauna, reflecting on the day, is truly a state of nothingness. On this day, I was fully satisfied with two sets, and the contemplation in the sauna led me in a positive direction. It is a facility where you can cleanse your mind, perfect for thinking.
