Japan's Hot Spring & Sauna Facilities TOP10 - August 2025
In August 2025, we present a ranking of particularly memorable hot spring and sauna facilities that we actually visited.
All Information Based on Actual Experience
All facilities listed on this site have been personally visited and experienced by the operator. All photos and reviews are original. We carefully select and introduce only the facilities that were truly exceptional.
Arima Kaido Onsen Suzuran no Yu
A hot spring facility in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, featuring Arima-type natural hot spring water. The 17°C cold plunge bath, blended with the famous Miyamizu water, offers a supreme experience, enveloping the body in a soft sensation. You can enjoy self-löyly in the Finnish sauna with the aroma of vihta, and the outdoor air bath in a garden created in the forest allows you to become one with nature. Experience the true essence of nature in the nude, listening to the wind, insect sounds, and water, and smelling the earth and wood. As you sharpen your senses, the fatigue and distractions accumulated in daily life gradually disappear. This exceptional facility offers a consistently moving experience, even on a second visit, with an addictive quality.
📖 Experience Stories
Iyo no Tojiba Kisuke no Yu
Located in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, this facility boasts the top spot in the 2024 Nifty Sauna Ranking nationwide. The 'Fujin Sauna,' with a capacity of 40 people and resembling a conference hall, features a 90°C automatic löyly, while the 'Oni Sauna' offers a 110°C experience with a temperature difference of 110°C. There are two types of cold plunge baths at 16°C and 9°C, and you can relax in an infinity chair in a dedicated indoor air bath room with the sounds of a babbling river and birdsong. The pleasure is so intense that you almost lose consciousness from the first set. It's a hot spring sauna facility in Ehime that can be enjoyed by three generations of family, enhancing blood circulation with carbonated springs. On this day, I visited with my mother and grandmother, and everyone looked blissfully happy.

Safi Spa Maiko
An ultimate facility in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, produced by sauna king Hiroshi Ota. It features two types of saunas: 'Mirumiru,' a loft-equipped sauna where you can lie down, and 'Mokumoku,' for dark meditation. The deep cold plunge baths at 17°C and 9°C, equipped with a vibra and cross counter, along with a waterfall function from above, provide a full-body experience from five directions. Achieving totonou while watching fireworks projections is like heaven. Completely relaxed by the golden route of sauna → cold plunge bath → cold plunge bath, I couldn't move for a while after completing three sets. It wasn't that I couldn't move because it was painful, but because it felt too good.

New Japan Umeda
Located in Osaka, this is the birthplace of capsule hotels in Japan and the setting for the drama 'Sauna.' Each of the three floors is equipped with a sauna and cold plunge bath. The Finnish sauna with the scent of vihta and wood is available for private use, and the high-temperature sauna with citrus aroma is also excellent. You can choose between 14°C and 18°C cold plunge baths, and experience a waterfall with water cascading down the walls. The flow is perfect, and it didn't disappoint even after hopping over from Arima Onsen. While eating stamina meals and miso katsu, I felt enveloped in happiness, thinking that even if I were told my life would end in a minute, I would have no complaints.

Kobe Sauna & Spa
A special place of memories for me. This is a long-established sauna in Kobe that I've been visiting since high school, and the Finnish sauna ranks first in my personal favorite sauna ranking. Enveloped in the scent of kelo wood and vihta imported directly from Finland in a dark hut, the combination of the 11.7°C cold plunge bath and outdoor air bath is perfect. The natural hot spring 'Kami no Yu' lavishly uses source water gushing from 1,004 meters underground, and the exquisite ginger pork set meal and fried chicken, along with a nap in the reclining room, are perfect. It provides a sense of security like a home sauna, saving me from sleepless nights in a musty hotel.

Chomeiji Onsen Amaha no Yu
Located in Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture, this facility offers a rare wood-burning sauna and a spectacular view of Lake Biwa in a super sento. In a meditation space without a TV, you can fully experience the crackling sound and aroma of burning wood. The 15°C deep cold plunge bath with jet water flow lowers the perceived temperature even further. You can achieve peace of mind with an outdoor air bath overlooking Lake Biwa, and the carbonated and radium hot springs are also wonderful. Before I knew it, I had completed five sets. This facility offers not only relaxation but also peace of mind with a precious wood-burning sauna experience and the calm scenery of Lake Biwa. It was worth driving from Naruto, feeling a strong urge to travel!

Spa Resort Ogoto Agaryanse
A spa resort facility in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, located at Ogoto Onsen. The open-air bath with a panoramic view of Lake Biwa is wonderful, and it made me realize how amazing it is to have 'sauna' as a travel destination. The hot spring quality of Ogoto Onsen warms the body, and the spacious sauna room with the aroma of aroma oils, along with the deep and wide 14°C cold plunge bath, provides comfortable cooling. The outdoor air bath overlooking Lake Biwa was so pleasant that I fell asleep, and before I knew it, I had completed six sets (three sets before lunch, three sets in the evening). The body feels incredibly good, and it makes you think that everything you need for a happy life is here. The day before, I enjoyed exquisite Omi beef on Kurokabe Street.
📖 Experience Stories
Shimanami Onsen Kisuke no Yu
Located in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, this facility offers an experience to awaken your cells with a morning sauna starting at 5:30 AM. The main sauna, a spacious and dark meditation space, and a six-person hut sauna with the aroma of green tea löyly are available. I enjoyed a private sauna experience, monopolizing the 16°C cold plunge bath while being enveloped in the scent of Ehime-grown green tea. The morning sauna, unlike at night, stimulates the cells with a sense of 'let's have a great day,' awakening each dormant cell for a special state of relaxation. Whenever I have free time, all I think about is going to the sauna. Traveling an hour to Imabari just to enjoy the sauna and hot springs, and then traveling an hour back, makes for a worthwhile sauna journey.

Arima Onsen Taiko no Yu
Located in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, this luxurious facility allows you to enjoy both the 'Golden Spring' and 'Silver Spring' of Japan's finest Arima Onsen. On this day, I felt like soaking in the hot springs leisurely. The abundant hot spring components raise the pulse like a sauna just by soaking, and the 18°C source-flowing cold plunge bath feels mellow, making it feel like you can soak forever. The open-air air bath in the morning sunlight is exceptional, and even without a sauna, the hot springs alone can increase blood flow and provide a refreshing sensation. The exquisite sushi and Japanese cuisine at 'Hana Juraku' after the hot springs were also exceptional. If you're going to soak, you want to soak in Japan's finest hot springs. This facility makes you feel that way.

Yurara no Yu Oshikuma Branch
A facility located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. It makes you realize that changing plans is the essence of travel. Due to Nara Health Land being full, I made a sudden change of plans, and it turned out to be a great decision. After sweating profusely during a walk in Nara Park, I immediately cooled down in a 15°C cold plunge bath and sweated thoroughly in an electric stove sauna. Lying on a bench in the open-air bath, gazing at the Nara sky and listening to the sound of a babbling river during the outdoor air bath was the best. The situation with few guests also contributed to a comfortable experience. There is always a story in the process of going to the sauna. That story is life itself. This facility allows you to enjoy the story of travel through plan changes.
