Foreword
The finest inns in Japan are the ones devoted to their onsen
You want to enjoy onsen and saunas in Japan at their finest.
So where should you stay?
We made this magazine to answer that question.
Japan has more hotels and inns with onsen than anyone could count.
Inns deep in the mountains. Inns overlooking the sea. Long-established inns in historic onsen towns. Hotels in the city. Inns that put real effort into their saunas.
Because there are so many choices, finding the inn you truly want to stay at is no easy task for anyone who cares about onsen and saunas.
Having an onsen is not enough.
Nor is having a sauna.
The places we chose for this magazine put the quality of their onsen and saunas first and also offer the refinement of a fine inn.
What kind of onsen is it? What kind of sauna? What kind of cold plunge? What view do you see from there?
And then the rooms, the food, the spaces, the hospitality.
An inn you would want to stay at for its onsen and sauna.
And an inn where the stay itself is a pleasure.
We chose with both in mind.
As a media outlet dedicated to Japan’s onsen and saunas, we have researched a great many bathhouses and inns across the country.
From among them, we selected the inns we want people who travel Japan for its onsen and saunas to know about, and gathered them in this single volume.
What this magazine aims for is not to line up as many inns as possible.
“If I want to enjoy onsen and saunas in Japan, where should I stay?”
It aims to make the answer to that question easier to find.
We believe a fine onsen experience does not end in the bath.
You soak in the water, sit in the sauna, and feel the breeze.
Afterward you have a meal, rest in your room and spend some quiet time.
When morning comes, you go back into the onsen.
There are hours you can only have by staying at an inn.
That is why this magazine introduces not only the onsen and saunas but also the time you spend at each inn.
As you turn the pages, imagine your own journey.
What view would you see from this open-air bath?
What would the air feel like as you step out of this sauna?
What would it be like to spend a night at this inn and wake to the morning?
So that you can set off as soon as you find an inn you want to visit, the pages also include directions and links to where you can book.
Not just to browse, but
to learn. To choose. To decide where to go. To book.
We made this magazine so that all of that connects within its pages.
Not an inn that happens to have an onsen, but an inn you want to stay at for its onsen and sauna.
For anyone who wants a truly fine onsen and sauna experience in Japan, we would be glad if this magazine became the answer to where to stay.
And when you actually visit that inn,
“I’m glad I stayed here”
is what we hope you will find yourself thinking.
